Original job description

Join the City of Medicine Hat as a Coordinator, Special Projects!

Temporary (Up to 5 months) |Part‑Time | On site

Starting at $36.03 per hour

Are you a highly organized and proactive professional who thrives on bringing projects, programs, and people together to create meaningful outcomes? The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a Coordinator, Special Projects to play a key role in supporting initiatives that contribute to community growth and economic development. In this role, you will help support development opportunities, coordinate key stakeholders, and ensure the seamless administration of the economic development department.

We're a team that believes how we work is just as important as the work we do. Grounded in our values - Own It, Team Up, Be Curious, and Service with Care - we're committed to delivering meaningful impact for our community while supporting each other along the way.

What You'll Do

Drive the successful administration of economic development programs that support residential and non-residential investment within the community.
Ensure incentive applications are processed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with established program requirements, helping projects move forward with confidence.
Deliver exceptional coordination and administrative support that keeps projects, initiatives, and departmental priorities on track.
Build strong relationships with internal departments and property owners, to support successful program outcomes.
Monitor program performance, maintain accurate records, and provide meaningful reporting that supports informed decision-making.
Support the successful delivery of special events and financial administration activities that enhance departmental effectiveness and community engagement.

A closer look at the role

In this role, you'll be at the centre of Economic Development operations, helping coordinate the activities that turn ideas into action. Your day may involve supporting leadership with administrative duties, reviewing and processing incentive program applications, preparing reports and briefing materials, managing records, and supporting project follow-up activities.

You'll be part of a team that values initiative, collaboration, diplomacy, and community impact. Success in this role comes from being someone others can rely on, someone who follows through, communicates clearly, adapts quickly, and helps transform moving pieces into meaningful progress.

The successful candidate will be flexible and able to work varied daytime hours based on evolving business and operational needs.

What You Bring

Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
Strong relationship-building abilities and a collaborative approach to working with diverse stakeholders.
High ethical standards, integrity, and discretion when handling confidential information.
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including editing, proofreading, and professional correspondence.
A solutions-focused mindset with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and environments.
Initiative, resourcefulness, and a commitment to achieving results.
A customer-service orientation with a passion for creating positive experiences for both internal and external stakeholders.
The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

Successful completion of a two (2) year diploma in business administration or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
Five (5) years of experience in a coordination or administrative support environment, including at least two (2) years of event coordination experience.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other modern office software, with the ability to learn new systems and applications is an asset.
Knowledge of event coordination practices, including logistics and health and safety requirements.
Valid Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Why you'll love working with us

We show up with accountability, care, and teamwork - every day, with every person. Our values guide how we work together, serve our community, and support one another so we can deliver exceptional public service.

Collaborative team culture: Be part of a supportive environment where we Team Up to deliver great community outcomes.
Career growth and development: We encourage you to Be Curious, offering training and development that fosters continuous learning.
Competitive total rewards: We Own It by recognizing and rewarding the work that moves our community forward.
