The City of North Vancouver is the urban core of the beautiful North Shore and has a long-term vision to be "The Healthiest Small City in the World”, with five key priorities: being a City for People, a Resilient City, a Vibrant City, a Connected City, and a Prosperous City.

We are seeking a passionate and forward-thinking Utilities Engineer to join our Infrastructure, Transportation & Parks Department. As a key member of the Utilities Planning and Design team, you will help plan, deliver, and steward the infrastructure systems that support a thriving and growing community.

Located between the mountains and Burrard Inlet, the City of North Vancouver is a compact and complete community where infrastructure and the natural environment are closely connected. From protecting urban creeks and renewing aging infrastructure to supporting a growing and evolving community, the City offers unique and rewarding engineering challenges that call for both traditional expertise and innovative thinking to deliver sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of life for our residents.

Responsibilities

The Utilities Engineer will play a key role in planning, delivering, and managing the City’s utility infrastructure programs and projects, including:

  • Utility master planning, hydraulic modelling, and long-range infrastructure strategies for water, sanitary and drainage infrastructure (including natural and green infrastructure);
  • Capital planning, budgeting, and asset lifecycle management;
  • Integrated stormwater management, flood management, groundwater management, and wet weather reduction initiatives;
  • Development servicing reviews and coordination with land development activities;
  • Development and modernization of policies, bylaws, and design standards to enhance utility system performance, resilience, and long-term value.
  • Delivery of capital projects, including design support, procurement, contract administration, and construction oversight;
  • Management of engineering consultants and collaboration with City staff across multiple disciplines; and
  • Partnership with internal departments, external agencies, developers, and stakeholders to advance City infrastructure objectives.

Requirements

You are an adaptable and motivated professional who enjoys the variety and collaboration that comes with working in a municipal environment. You bring experience in utility engineering, infrastructure planning, design, construction, operations, or asset management, along with a strong understanding of municipal water, sanitary, stormwater, and drainage systems.

You have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, are registered or eligible for registration with EGBC, and possess a minimum of five years of related experience. Experience with hydraulic modelling, utility master planning, asset management programs, condition assessment and rehabilitation planning, and development servicing is considered an asset. Familiarity with PCSWMM, InfoWater Pro and ESRI GIS applications and the MMCD are desirable. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence is required.
