Original job description
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Downtown Toronto, ON (Hybrid)
Salary: $150,000–$200,000 base + bonus
Industry: Mining
Controller (Spanish Speaking)
About the Opportunity
Our client is a publicly traded mining company with a large-scale development project in South America, valued in the multi-billion dollar range. The Toronto finance team works closely with an experienced local controllership team, and the business is entering a period of significant strategic growth.
The Controller owns the books and records for the South American project. The immediate priorities are consolidating fragmented Excel-based records into a single source of truth and building a clean, reliable reporting foundation ahead of a planned ERP implementation. You’ll lead a small team, partner with Spanish-speaking site finance, and gain broad exposure to complex accounting in a high-profile mining environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the books and records and consolidation across five legal entities
- Evaluate existing Excel-based workbooks and establish a single source of truth for financial data
- Lead the migration of financial records into SAP over the first 6 to 12 months
- Manage local GAAP (IFRS-based) to US GAAP conversion and identify key differences
- Research and write technical accounting memos on complex matters, including financing arrangements
- Oversee foreign exchange accounting in a hyperinflationary economy
- Coordinate closely with the site controllership team, in Spanish and English
- Lead, coach, and mentor a direct report, and assess future team needs as the business evolves
What You Bring
- Fluency in Spanish (must have)
- CPA designation with public accounting experience (Big 4, BDO, MNP, or equivalent)
- Public company reporting experience
- Strong technical accounting, research, and memo-writing skills
- Experience consolidating multiple entities and cleaning up complex records
- People leadership experience, with the ability to coach and develop a team
- Comfortable building structure where processes are still maturing
Nice to Have
- Mining industry experience, particularly development-stage projects
- US GAAP experience
- Exposure to hyperinflationary economies or FX instruments in Latin America
- SAP implementation experience
