Interim Controller
Employment Type: Contract (3 to 6 months), 3 to 4 days per week
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid, minimum 3 days onsite)
Rate: $65 to $75/hr
Industry: Office Technology: Managed Print & IT Services
Position Type: Backfill
About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established office technology dealership in the GTA. Roughly 80% of the business is equipment sales, leasing and service, supported by a smaller managed IT services line. Billing and contract activity runs through an industry-specific system built for the dealer model, and results roll up directly into the financials.
This Interim Controller / Accounting Manager contract backfills the finance leadership seat. You’ll lead month-end, payroll, AP/AR oversight and year-end, working with two finance administrators who handle most of the transactional work. There is no formal month-end package. The focus is on complete, accurate billing and invoicing, with clean numbers going straight to a CEO who is closely tuned in to costs and revenue.
The business is also moving through a systems transition, including a CRM change and a possible replacement of its core operating platform. That brings a journal entry conversion project over roughly six months. If you like owning the finance function end to end, working directly with the CEO and improving reporting as you go, you’ll have real influence from the first week.
Key Responsibilities
- Own payroll processing and payouts, including collecting and validating inputs
- Oversee AP and AR administration, directing two finance administrators
- Complete month-end close, making sure all billing and invoicing is captured and flows into the financials
- Work closely with the CEO on collections for larger, harder-to-collect accounts
- Rebuild and improve the AR aging report so it supports collection decisions
- Manage equipment inventory, including copiers, and reconcile to the books
- Review IT services invoicing and recommend process or system improvements
- Lead year-end close and coordinate the Notice to Reader engagement with external accountants
- Support the systems transition, including journal entry conversions from legacy to new platforms
- Document processes and maintain controls as systems change
What You Bring
- Experience at the controller or accounting manager level in a hands-on, small to mid-sized environment
- Strong payroll experience, including processing and payouts
- Working knowledge of AP, AR, collections and aging analysis
- Experience leading year-end with external accountants, including Notice to Reader engagements
- Comfort managing a small team of finance administrators
- Ability to work directly with a CEO and communicate clearly on costs, revenue and cash
- Available onsite in Toronto at least 3 days per week
Nice to Have
- Equipment dealership, copier or managed print industry experience
- Dealer-specific ERP experience
- Journal entry conversion or ERP migration experience
- Experience with mixed revenue models, such as equipment, service and IT services billing
