Original job description
Employment Type: Contract, part-time (~15 hrs/week)
Location: Etobicoke, ON (On-Site 2 days per week to start, tapering as the role settles)
Rate: $75-85/hr
Industry: Manufacturing (Consumer Packaged Goods)
Position Type: Backfill
About the Opportunity
Our client is a venture-backed consumer goods manufacturer based in Etobicoke, with a production floor of full-time employees working alongside roughly 100 agency workers each month. Many of the agency workers have been on site for years and know the operation well. The company recently added a new layer of production floor management, and the change in accountability and process has brought a rise in complaints, allegations and workplace investigations.
This Interim Director of HR role backfills a part-time HR contractor who is stretched by the volume and complexity of the investigations. You will take ownership of employee relations and workplace investigations from day one, reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer. That includes running investigations end to end, separating fact from noise, and delivering conclusions leadership can act on. You will also act as the CAO’s trusted advisor on “what do we do in this case” and manage the relationship with the staffing agency and the flow of agency workers.
This is a hands-on mandate with real visibility. Workers paid by another company need to feel safe raising concerns with this organization’s HR, so the right person will be approachable on the floor and firm when a hard conversation is needed. Hours flex with workload, and the on-site presence tapers as trust builds.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead workplace investigations from intake to findings, including harassment, misconduct and allegations between workers and supervisors
- Assess credibility, interview parties and witnesses, and document findings to a standard leadership can act on
- Take over open files from the current HR contractor and manage the handoff
- Establish and promote complaint channels (anonymous and in person) that hourly and agency workers trust and use
- Advise the CAO on employee relations matters, case outcomes and risk
- Manage the relationship with the staffing agency, including the flow of agency workers and onboarding them to site processes
- Hold managers and workers to account in a direct, fair and consistent way
- Maintain a visible presence on the production floor, including around shift changes where needed
- Partner with the new production management team to support accountability and process changes
What You Bring
- Senior manager or director level HR experience, able to operate as an advisor and not only an executor
- Hands-on experience personally leading workplace investigations, and the ability to walk through how you ran them, weighed credibility and documented findings
- Manufacturing or industrial experience with a temp-heavy or unionized hourly workforce
- Comfort walking a production floor and handling blunt, floor-level conflict
- A friendly but firm approach: warm and approachable, and direct enough to set direction and have the hard conversation
- A track record of making it safe for employees to raise harassment and misconduct concerns
- Availability for a part-time contract (~15 hrs/week) with 2 days on site to start
Nice to Have
- Experience managing temp agency relationships and onboarding agency workers
- Background in mining, heavy industry or similar high-friction environments
- Experience building complaint channels, such as anonymous reporting or open-door practices, that workers actually use
