Original job description

Class8 is building a suite of products to help trucking companies better run their business, and help them connect with freight opportunities through brokerages and other data partners. Our team works with real-time, big data across thousands of trucks, and creates apps across multiple surface areas including mobile, desktop, and embedded vehicles. We’re looking for a highly ambitious, creative Lead Data Scientist to join our team. In this role, you will be building the core ML, AI, and LLM systems that underpin our Carrier and Capacity Science products. Our team does everything from trying to predict vehicle behaviour from real-time, unlabelled sensor data to building agentic voice solutions to solving mixed-integer linear problems. You’ll be reporting directly to the Director of Data Science & Applied AI, and work with a highly collaborative team of data scientists and engineers working on some of the biggest problems in freight. This role is perfect for you if you love to be hands on building cutting edge solutions, but have an interest in growing into a leadership role within this team. In This Role, You Will: Lead technical projects and take ownership over certain ML systems on our core product Work with product and engineering to take data science ideas from conception to experimentation to production in line with business objectives Develop, validate, and deploy machine learning, optimization, and other algorithms that enable critical product functionality Translate product requirements into data science projects and initiatives Document, communicate, and educate stakeholders on product capabilities powered by statistical analyses, machine learning, and operations research Maintain subject matter expertise by keeping up with the latest literature on machine learning and operations research Build standards and processes to make this the best data science team working in freight You’re Right For The Role If You Have These Skills: Required: 5+ years experience applying machine learning in a non-academic environment–ideally in a high-growth software development environment Degree in a technical discipline, such as Machine Learning, Data Science, Operations Research, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Computational Biology, or other technical field Ability to deeply understand the product problems we are trying to solve and building solutions that leverage the latest ideas in optimization, recommenders, and/or search Comfortable working throughout the entire Python codebase from data pipelines to machine learning systems to the deployment stack Facility for distilling technical results and processes for lay users and internal stakeholders Expert understanding and/or experience with the ML stack in AWS and other cloud services Comfortable using AI tools in your workflow to increase productivity and research output, but with a keen eye on when, where, and how to use it responsibly Bonus If You Have: Experience with supply chain, logistics, and/or freight Experience with OR and optimization frameworks (ex. Requirements

Candidates should be able to translate product problems into practical solutions, communicate technical results clearly, and use AI tools responsibly; experience in freight, optimization, real-time data, MLOps, or LLMs is a bonus.
