Original job description

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely.

We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

Summary:

We are currently seeking a Software Development Manager to join our Engineering team. This role is only available to candidates in the PST and MST timezones in Canada. If you are local to our Burnaby or Calgary office hubs, you will be expected to be in office minimum twice per week on two of our Anchor Days.

At Clio we strive to be both human and high performing. For Development Managers this means supporting and growing your people, strong execution as a team and leadership group, and building solid technical solutions. Our development managers are highly technical and hands on, designing, reviewing, and coding alongside their team. They coach and build their teams to be both strong technically and strong team members. They create a safe and productive environment for all Clions. Every people manager at Clio is expected to lead with context, set the pace, and own the outcome - giving their team the clarity to move fast, the authority to decide, and the accountability to deliver.

What your team does:

The Clio Billing System (CBS) team is building the multi-product, multi-region monetization platform that positions Clio to rapidly and sustainably expand the products, services, and extras we sell to our customers. We partner closely with Rev-ops, Sales-ops, CS-ops, Marketing, Finance, and product teams to define and deliver impactful projects that directly contribute to Clio meeting its revenue goals.

Our CBS Monetization Development Managers often wear a technical product manager hat. You will drive requirement definition across different parts of the business and guide your partners toward pragmatic solutions. You’ll build deep domain knowledge and have ownership over evolving our system in the right direction with each project. There will be projects where you fill that role and others where you collaborate with a product manager.

A day in the life might look like:

Partnering with your cross-functional stakeholders to understand their challenges, identifying and advocating for pragmatic yet sustainable solutions, crafting a roadmap for your team, and driving those solutions from start to end while coordinating with the impacted parts of the organization;
Continuously evolving the way your team is leveraging AI and applying it at every step of the project and development lifecycle
Working with your team on designing good technical solutions (teaching, coaching, collaborating, and giving feedback to produce good architecture documents, plans, and code)
Actively participating as a contributor to projects and the system (requirements, design, implementation, review)
Crafting effective 1:1s with your direct reports to make sure they are supported in their career growth and development goals;
Growing and strengthening Clio’s engineering team by actively participating in interviewing and hiring

You may be a fit for this role if you have:

Demonstrated success in people leadership in software development, particularly with large scale SaaS products;
A strong background in hands-on software development;
Proven ability to align a wide group of people with varying needs on pragmatic solutions
History of successfully building clarity and understanding for non-technical stakeholders through written and verbal communication;
Diverse base of knowledge that allows you to help your team solve complex technical problems;
The ability to describe successful projects you worked on, as well as a collection of lessons learned from failed projects;
Growth mindset when it comes to process improvement and new technologies, especially AI;
Demonstrated ability to hire the best and brightest engineers in a fast-paced job market - and to coach, develop, and retain engineering talent;
You are equally energized by both your own technical work as well as contributing to the career growth of your team;
You have strong opinions that are weakly held, and foster that same attitude in others;
You believe in providing honest, actionable feedback to your team, and encourage your team to reciprocate;
You devise roadmaps to guide your team, but aren't beholden to them -- you easily adapt to a constantly changing world.

Serious bonus points if you have:

A philosophy on what makes for great software development teams;
Experience with Ruby on Rails;
Experience with quoting, subscriptions, and billing systems at scale;
Experience with Stripe Billing (other 3rd party subscription/billing solutions) or Salesforce integration; and
Experience with product management or business analysis

This posting is for an existing vacancy.

This is a new role.

What you will find here:

Compensation is one of the main components of Clio’s Total Rewards Program. We have developed a series of programs and processes to ensure we are creating fair and competitive pay practices that form the foundation of our human and high-performing culture.

Some highlights of our Total Rewards program include:

Competitive, equitable salary with top-tier health benefits, dental, and vision insurance
Hybrid work environment, with expectation for local Clions (Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Dublin, London, New York City and Sydney) to be in office min. twice per week.
Flexible time off policy, with an encouraged 20 days off per year.
$2000 annual counseling benefit
RRSP matching and RESP contribution
Clioversary recognition program with special acknowledgement at 3, 5, 7, and 10 years

The expected salary range for this role is $180,500 to $270,700 CAD. Initial placement within the range is informed by geographic region, experience, and skillset, with room to progress as impact and tenure grow. Final offer amounts will vary based on candidate profile.

Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging and Equity (DIBE) & Accessibility

Our team shows up as their authentic selves, and are united by our mission. We are dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion. We pride ourselves in building and fostering an environment where our teams feel included, valued, and enabled to do the best work of their careers, wherever they choose to log in from. We believe that different perspectives, skills, backgrounds, and experiences result in higher-performing teams and better innovation. We are committed to equal employment and we encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

Clio provides accessibility accommodations during the recruitment process. Should you require any accommodation, please let us know and we will work with you to meet your needs.
