Business Planning & Analysis, Financial Analyst – Markham, Ontario
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Business Planning & Analysis (“BP&A”) of Clover Leaf Seafoods, the Financial Analyst, BP&A supports short- and long-term financial planning, forecasting, performance reporting and financial analysis across Clover Leaf's Canadian businesses. The Analyst develops and maintains financial models, analyzes business performance and provides data-driven insights to support effective decision-making and achievement of financial goals.
This role works closely with Finance and cross-functional partners to understand key business drivers, validate planning assumptions, investigate performance, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and support business initiatives. The Analyst also contributes to advancing BP&A analytics, reporting, tools and processes through continuous improvement and automation.
What You’ll Do Here:
BP&A is responsible for financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and monthly reporting of P&L performance and in-depth VPC (volume, price, cost) results for Clover Leaf Domestic and Bumble Bee Seafoods International, as well as support for Corporate P&L and Total Canada consolidation.
The Financial Analyst is a key contributor to these processes, providing accurate financial analysis, maintaining planning and reporting models, and working with business partners to understand the drivers of performance and support informed decisions.
Business Planning:
- Support the annual operating budget, in-year forecasts and risk and opportunity assessment processes across the Canadian business.
- Prepare, maintain and improve financial planning models, incorporating key assumptions including volume, pricing and deal levels, product costs and purchases, inbound freight, packaging, new SKUs and other relevant business drivers.
- Support SG&A planning by maintaining base planning models, updating assumptions and coordinating inputs with budget owners.
- Work with Finance and cross-functional partners to validate assumptions, investigate changes and ensure forecasts reflect current business expectations.
Financial Reporting & Performance Analysis:
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial results versus forecast, budget and prior year, investigating key variances and developing clear explanations of underlying business drivers.
- Prepare and analyze VPC performance, including volume, price, mix and cost drivers, and support the development of monthly management reporting and financial commentary.
- Support Total Canada P&L reporting, including Clover Leaf Domestic, Bumble Bee Seafoods International, Corporate and other Canadian business areas as required.
- Analyze inventory, product costs, SG&A, marketing and trade-related spending, SKU profitability, foreign exchange impacts and other key financial measures as required.
Financial & Decision Support:
- Provide financial analysis to support innovation, marketing and SG&A spending, cost and pricing decisions, and other cross-functional business initiatives.
- Develop analysis, scenario modelling and business cases as required to support evaluation of alternatives and investment decisions.
- Respond to ad hoc financial analysis requests, ensuring information is accurate, relevant and clearly communicated.
Performance Metrics
- Maintain and analyze key financial and operational performance metrics and track results against financial targets.
- Identify trends and emerging risks or opportunities, and bring findings forward to the Senior Manager, BP&A.
- Support ROI and post-investment analysis where applicable to help assess business performance and decision effectiveness.
Business Partnership & Communication
- Build effective working relationships with cross-functional partners including Sales, Marketing, Revenue Management, Supply Chain and Procurement to understand business activity, obtain and validate assumptions, and investigate financial performance.
- Communicate financial findings clearly and help translate financial information for non-finance stakeholders.
- Demonstrate curiosity and business acumen by seeking to understand the operational and commercial drivers behind financial results.
Improve Processes
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve financial models, reporting and analytical processes through standardization, automation and improved use of data and technology.
- Support the development and enhancement of analytics, dashboards and reporting tools to improve the quality, efficiency and accessibility of financial information.
- Maintain strong controls, documentation and consistency across recurring BP&A processes.
What You Bring to the Team:
- University degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics or a related discipline; CPA designation or progress toward a professional accounting designation is an asset.
- 2-5 years of experience in business planning, financial analysis, FP&A or a related finance role.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to move from detailed financial data to clear conclusions and business insights.
- Strong Excel and financial modelling skills; experience with SAP or another ERP system and BI/reporting tools is an asset.
- Experience working with multiple teams and cross-functional stakeholders; ability to build constructive working relationships across Finance and the business.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance audiences.
- Strong business acumen and curiosity, with the ability to understand how operational and commercial drivers influence financial performance.
- Track record of continuous improvement, including improving models, reports, processes or analytical tools.
- Strong attention to detail, organization and follow-through, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines.
- Solution-oriented mindset, high degree of ownership and a focus on delivering accurate, timely and useful financial information.
Compensation:
- Hiring Range: CAD $65,000 – $80,000.
- Eligible for an annual bonus of up to 5%, based on company performance and the terms of the company bonus plan.
- Final compensation will be based on relevant experience, skills, location, and internal equity.
