Original job description

About Clutch:

We’re on a mission to reinvent the way people buy, sell, and own cars. Are you game?

Clutch is Canada’s largest online used car retailer, delivering a seamless, hassle-free car buying and selling experience to drivers everywhere. Customers can browse hundreds of cars from the comfort of their home, get the right one delivered to their door, and enjoy peace of mind with our 10-Day Money-Back Guarantee… and that’s just the beginning. Named to The Globe and Mail’s list of Canada’s Top Growing Companies for six consecutive years and also awarded spots on Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50™ and Fast 500™ lists, we’re looking to add curious, hard-working, and driven individuals to our growing team. Headquartered in Toronto, Clutch was founded in 2017 and currently services Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Clutch is backed by a number of world-class investors, including D1 Capital, Altos Ventures, BMO Capital Partners, Canaan, Real Ventures, and others. To learn more, visit clutch.ca.

About the role:

We’re looking for an Art Director to lead concept development for Clutch. Our creative team executes at a high bar; this role adds the thinking behind it. You’ll turn business and audience insight into strategically sound concepts, then art-direct them across campaigns, product, social, and retail.

This is a hands-on role for a master of craft who is fluent across design tools and formats and obsessed with getting the work right, whether that means building rigorous design systems or pushing a bolder idea than anyone expected. If you’re an Art Director looking to really contribute to a brand's success and actually move projects from concept to reality, this is the place for you.

What you’ll do:

Lead concept development and ideation with the Creative Director for campaigns, brand moments, and customer experiences, grounding ideas in business context and audience insight.
Own daily art direction: set the visual bar, direct photo, video, motion, and design production, and keep the work sharp from first sketch to final asset.
Run creative reviews and approval within the design team and external partners, giving clear, actionable feedback that makes the work better and the team stronger.
Move fluidly between concept and hands-on execution across a range of design tools and mediums, building out designs across product, video, experiential and digital.
Concept and service the marketing departments advertising needs, building tools that contribute towards our self service ‘creative engine’.
Use data and creative learnings to sharpen future concepts and continuously improve the work.
Increase the creative team's output whilst raising craft and originality.

What Success Looks Like:

Develop bold, strategically grounded concepts for campaigns and brand experiences.
The quality and craft of the team's creative work has visibly risen through your art direction, feedback, and hands-on design skills.
The creative team is shipping more, faster, and the standard hasn't slipped.
Audience insights, business context, and performance learnings are shaping the work, and each round of creative is better than the last.

What You Bring:

5+ years in a creative agency or in-house brand team, including 3+ years in an art direction role, with campaigns that shipped and ran in market.
Strong art direction and design craft. Portfolio required, we’ll want to see shipped work and your specific role on it.
Experience leading shoots and directing photographers, videographers and freelancers on set, and reviewing and approving day-to-day creative within an established brand system.
Ability to apply a brand system consistently across campaigns, marketing, product and customer touchpoints.
Collaborative by default; this role is in-office at 60 Adelaide St.
Nice to have: experience in automotive, retail or e-commerce, or with high-volume product photography.

Why You'll Love It At Clutch:

Join the start of an exciting team as we build the next household Canadian brand, at one of Canada’s largest and fastest-growing B2C startups.
Own the concept. You’re not executing someone else’s brief; you’re the person turning insight into the idea, then art-directing it all the way through.
Ship in weeks, not quarters. Real performance data on every round, so you see what landed and make the next one sharper.
One brand, no client churn. Go deep on a single brand with a direct line to the Creative Director and leadership, with no layers of account management between you and the decision.
Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits from day one, plus room to grow into senior creative leadership as the team scales.

Employment Type:
New, Permanent Full-Time

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary range: $95,000 - $120,000 annually.
Benefits: Comprehensive healthcare, dental, vision, prescriptions, life insurance, and dependent coverage; starting from day 1.
Pay decisions reflect skills, performance, market benchmarking, responsibilities, and working conditions.

Clutch is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all individuals have an opportunity to succeed. If you require accommodation at any stage of the interview process, please email talent@clutch.ca.

We use AI-assisted tools to help screen and assess applications. Final hiring decisions are made by our team.
