Original job description
CMC Electronics has an international reputation for innovation in cockpit systems integration, avionics, and display solutions for civil and military aviation. Founded in 1903 as Canadian Marconi Company, CMC blends over a century of experience with the agility of a young, innovative team in software and electronics.
Headquartered in Montreal, CMC employs more than 800 people across facilities in Canada and the US. Its parent company, TransDigm, is a leading producer of highly engineered aerospace components, with nearly 50 companies in its portfolio.
Job Description
This position reports to the Hardware Engineering Manager and collaborates closely with the Chief Engineer and System Engineers to design and enhance CMC’s core products. As the hands-on hardware expert and technical lead, you own the hardware design from requirements through certification and qualification. A strong avionics hardware background, firmware understanding, and experience integrating modern and legacy systems are essential, alongside collaboration with Manufacturing to improve yield and sustainability.
This is an individual contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities and no direct reports. The Chief Engineer and System Engineers lead customer-facing activities, with your close technical support.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Design & Architecture: Lead the hardware design, specifications and architecture, aligned with system-level and certification requirements. Document decisions (block diagrams, the Hardware Engineering Development Plan, balancing performance, reliability, safety, cost, and design reuse, and aligning with the Platform Architect’s reference design.
- Design Authority & Technical Leadership: Hold hardware design authority for all mission computers, navigation systems, and display control panels: approve ECOs, guide design teams (AEH, Electrical, Mechanical, PCB), and maintain interface control, configuration management, and requirements traceability. Direct execution across these groups, working with HQE, Test Engineering and Airworthiness to formalize estimates, ensure compliance with CMC work instructions, and act as the technical bridge to quality, verification, and supplier teams.
- Certification, Qualification & Safety: Lead hardware compliance (DO-254, DO-160, MIL-STD) and qualification testing (ATP, QTP, QTR). Support FMEA and MTBF safety analyses and provide inputs to ARP4754A and ARP4761.
- Hands-on Problem Solving: Lead hardware integration and troubleshooting, including root-cause analysis of complex issues, with limited technical guidance.
- Design for Manufacturability & Obsolescence: Partner with Manufacturing and Supply Chain on yield, testability, factory cost, and component obsolescence.
- Roadmap & Trade Studies: Track technology and regulatory trends, run trade-off studies on avionics architectures, and contribute to the next-generation product roadmap with the Platform Architect.
- Bids & Proposals: Own hardware solutions and estimates for new programs. Translate customer RFPs into requirements and proposal content, supporting the Business Unit Directors in winning the bid.
- Customer Support: Support design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) as hardware subject-matter expert, alongside the Chief Engineer and System Engineers who lead customer interactions.
- CMC Culture Role Model: Drive high standards for individual, team, and organizational achievement with a strong bias for action and data-driven decisions. Foster ownership, accountability, and open and honest communication.
Required
Education & Licensing
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or eligible.
- 5+ years in avionics hardware, including highly complex mission computers, navigation & display systems, civil and military markets.
- Technical lead for cross-functional, multi-site hardware teams (electrical, PCB layout, mechanical).
- Demonstrated experience in the full lifecycle development of safety-critical, certified airborne hardware, using AC20-152A and DO-254.
- Firsthand experience designing and certifying safety-critical graphical processors and safety-critical multi-core processors.
- Hands-on design: digital, analog, power, high-speed interfaces, embedded processors.
- Detailed knowledge of DO-160, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553.
- Hardware qualification testing: defining, executing, and reviewing test campaigns.
- Experience working with certification authorities (Transport Canada, FAA, EASA).
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills, and the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience translating customer requirements into hardware specifications, with the ability to think big pictures and arrive at viable technical solutions, across electronics, software, firmware, algorithms, and mechanical disciplines.
- Requirements management in DOORS (or equivalent); familiarity with aviation manufacturing standards.
- Excellent communication skills in English and French.
- Eligible for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program, NATO Secret clearance, and ITAR access.
- Standards: DO-178C, DO-297, ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-HDBK-217, GEIA-STD-0008.
- Processors / architecture: NXP and TI safety-critical processors, Intel-based platforms, ARINC 664 (AFDX) and Time Sensitive Networks (TSN).
- Avionics systems: FMS, GPS, TCAS, TAWS, WXR, SVS, audio systems, moving maps.
- Certification procedures: FAA TSO, FARs, TC/STC, FAR Part 23/25.
- Cybersecurity: NSA MIT-005FS-2014, AFMAN 33-282, AFMAN 17-1301.
- FPGA: design experience.
