Responsibilities:
- Serve as the direct line manager for a chapter of Data Engineering Specialists, fostering their professional growth and expertise through continuous coaching, mentorship, and on-the-job development.
- Define the critical data engineering skills needed for the future - particularly around emerging AI technologies - and proactively build the chapter’s capabilities to meet evolving domain demands.
- Lead your chapter in designing, building, and maintaining robust, scalable, and reliable data pipelines and infrastructure while establishing best practices across coding standards, CI/CD, testing, and infrastructure management.
- Propose and implement architectural solutions and strategies in collaboration with the Data Architecture team to improve data quality, reliability, and accessibility.
- Champion a collaborative and positive chapter environment, facilitating knowledge sharing and a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence.
- Collaborate with Data Scientists, Analysts, and business partners to understand their data needs and provide the necessary engineering solutions.
- Conduct regular performance check-ins and annual performance reviews, focusing on growth and constructive feedback.
- Assess chapter member capabilities to inform workforce planning, recruitment, and talent development strategies.
- Serve as an active, hands-on member of an agile squad (approx. 30% of your time), contributing directly to the squad's goals and deliverables.
- Support the practical implementation of Data Governance, security, and privacy policies. Provide feedback on the same to improve the practice.
Qualifications & skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline required.
- 7+ years of experience in a data engineering or software engineering role with a data focus.
- 3+ years of proven experience in a leadership, mentorship, or coaching role. Formal management experience is a strong asset.
- Must have proficiency in writing complex, optimized SQL queries.
- Understanding of various data formats, and their applications (SQL, Filestore, Objectstore, NoSQL)
- Advanced programming skills in Python for data engineering (e.g., Pandas, PySpark, data pipeline frameworks like Airflow or Dagster).
- Deep experience with cloud data platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure), including data warehousing (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) and data processing services.
- Proven experience building and optimizing ETL/ELT data pipelines.
- Experience or understanding of Agile methodologies.
