We are conducting a confidential search for a Senior Structural Engineer to join the engineering team at an established manufacturer in the construction products sector.
About the Role
This role carries the structural design, analysis and review of fabricated aluminum and steel assemblies, connections, anchorage and related building components, from concept through fabrication and installation. It also carries responsibility for the professional practice of the engineering group. Just as important is presence. You will be the senior engineer the Edmonton team goes to when the Engineering Manager is not available, the person who knows what is moving on every active project, and a visible partner to sales, production and clients. This is not a design desk seat. If you want to sit alone with calculations all day, this is not the role.
Responsibilities
Structural engineering and design
- Perform structural analysis and design of fabricated aluminum and steel assemblies and weldments, connection and anchorage systems, support structures, and interfaces with wood, steel and concrete.
- Prepare engineering calculations, reports and design packages.
- Review and approve shop drawings, fabrication drawings and installation details.
- Conduct finite element analysis and other numerical structural analyses where appropriate.
- Evaluate existing structures and develop retrofit or remediation solutions.
- Ensure designs meet applicable Canadian codes, standards and project specifications.
Professional practice and documentation
- Serve as a Responsible Member under the company APEGA Permit to Practice, including support and upkeep of the Professional Practice Management Plan.
- Prepare sealed engineering documents where required, and take accountability for the work that carries a seal.
- Review calculations, specifications, drawings and technical submittals.
- Support permit submissions and Authority Having Jurisdiction reviews.
- Maintain engineering records and design documentation.
Leadership and team presence
- Act as the senior technical point of contact for the Edmonton team, so questions get answered and projects keep moving when the Engineering Manager is not available.
- Stay across all active projects, including scope, schedule, technical risk and change.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers, drafters and EITs, including assigning work that builds the experience they need to progress toward their P.Eng.
- Lead engineering activities across multiple concurrent projects and manage technical deliverables and priorities.
- Carry a portion of project management, coordinating submittals, RFIs, schedules and deliverables to take load off the Project Manager group.
- Be present and visible on the floor and in the office, not only at the design desk.
Cross functional and manufacturing support
- Work directly with sales on technical feasibility, pricing input and customer questions during the quoting stage.
- Support manufacturing and fabrication teams during project execution, including constructability and resolving issues before they reach the field.
- Coordinate with architects, contractors, consultants, fabricators and clients, and represent the company on site.
- Develop and improve standardized products and engineering processes.
- Lead root cause investigations and resolution of field, fabrication or installation issues.
- Participate in design reviews and value engineering initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
- P.Eng registered and in good standing with APEGA, or immediately transferable to APEGA.
- Ability and willingness to act as a Responsible Member under an APEGA Permit to Practice.
- Eight or more years of structural engineering experience in building, architectural, industrial or fabrication environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering projects and multidisciplinary teams, including developing junior engineers.
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Alberta Building Code and the National Building Code of Canada
- CSA and related structural design standards
- Steel, aluminum, concrete, wood and anchorage design principles
- Experience designing metal fabrications, structural frames and weldments.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and Inventor or SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with FEA software and advanced structural analysis methods.
- Comfort working across sales, production and client conversations rather than staying inside engineering.
- Willingness to work in office in Edmonton, with flexibility available.
- Strong communication, organizational and problem solving skills.

- Architectural metals, building envelope or facade engineering experience.
- Structural glass and glazing support experience.
- Building Information Modeling experience.
- Client facing consulting or technical sales experience.
- Experience supporting fabrication shops and production operations.
- Continuous improvement or quality management systems experience.
