About The Role
The Safety Advisor works with Branch Managers and employees to help keep workplaces safe. This role provides hands-on health and safety support to branches throughout the assigned region. The Safety Advisor helps identify hazards, reduce risks, support employee training, meet legal requirements, and improve safety performance.
What You’ll Be Doing
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with Branch Managers and employees to identify hazards, reduce risks, and improve everyday safety practices.
- Visit assigned branches regularly to inspect work areas, review hazards, observe work activities, coach employees, and provide practical safety guidance.
- Conduct and support equipment operator evaluations and help ensure employees are trained and able to safely operate assigned equipment.
- Monitor required safety training and certifications, identify gaps, and work with branch leadership to keep requirements current.
- Respond to incidents and emergencies, including conducting investigations, identifying causes, assigning corrective actions, following up, and sharing lessons learned.
- Review incident, inspection, hazard, corrective action, and safety performance information to identify trends, risks, and areas for improvement.
- Support Joint Health and Safety Committees, COR activities and audits, annual hazard assessments, emergency planning, and other parts of the company’s Health and Safety Management System.
- Review Safe Work Practices, Safe Job Procedures, hazard assessments, and other H&S programs and provide practical operational feedback.
- Share safety information with branches, including hazard alerts, emerging trends, and toolbox talks.
- Assist with Workers’ Compensation claims, return-to-work activities, contractor safety, safety equipment inspections, and other regional H&S needs.
- Keep up to date with health and safety legislation, industry standards, risks, and best practices.
Qualifications And Requirements
What You’ll Bring to the Team
- At least 3 years of health and safety experience, preferably in equipment rental, construction, industrial, transportation, or another field-based environment.
- A valid Class G driver’s licence with a satisfactory driver’s abstract of no more than 3 demerit points.
- Ability to travel regularly throughout the assigned region, including occasional overnight travel.
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field, or a suitable combination of education and experience.
- Practical knowledge of health and safety legislation and experience with workplace inspections, hazard and risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
- Good communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to coach employees and managers and explain safety requirements in clear, practical terms.
- Good judgment, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple branches and prioritize work based on risk.
- Comfortable working independently in operational environments while working closely with the H&S and Operations teams.
- Experience with equipment operator training or evaluations and COR programs is an asset.
- COR Internal Auditor certification is an asset.
- Experience with Workers’ Compensation claims and return-to-work activities is an asset.
- CRSP, CHSC, NCSO, Train-the-Trainer, or other relevant safety certifications are assets.
- Knowledge of mobile equipment, trenching and shoring, pump and power equipment, climate control systems, or propane and LPG safety is an asset.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office and electronic H&S management systems.
- Willingness to complete equipment inspection, operator evaluation, and other training required for the role.
