Canadian Railway Services (CRWS) is a fast-growing engineering firm specializing in rolling stock design, system integration, refurbishment, testing, and lifecycle support for passenger and freight rail vehicles.

About the Role

As a Senior Structural Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design, analysis, validation, and optimization of structural and mechanical components for passenger and freight rail vehicles.

You will support projects throughout their lifecycle, from concept development and structural validation to manufacturing support, troubleshooting, and refurbishment. As a senior team member, you will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and support key engineering decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of structural and mechanical components for rolling stock.
Prepare and review engineering calculations, models, and technical documentation.
Perform and validate structural assessments using hand calculations and FEA methods.
Validate designs against applicable standards and regulations (APTA, AAR, Transport Canada, EN/UIC).
Apply structural, manufacturing, and welding standards to support safe and compliant designs.
Support testing, inspections, design reviews, and field investigations.
Participate in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
Ensure engineering deliverables meet safety, quality, and compliance requirements.
Collaborate with engineering, production, suppliers, and project teams.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

What We're Looking For

Education

Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or an equivalent Canadian provincial engineering regulatory body.

Experience & Technical Competencies

7+ years of relevant experience in rolling stock, rail transportation, or related engineering environments.
Experience in heavy vehicles, structural design, or transportation engineering is considered an asset.
Ability to perform and review load calculations, load paths, reaction forces, and structural design decisions.
Strong knowledge of stress analysis, engineering mathematics, and structural calculations.
Experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
Experience with structural analysis tools (e.g., HyperMesh, SimSolid).
Strong understanding of weldments, fatigue design, bolted joints, and structural steel design.
Familiarity with rolling stock maintenance and lifecycle challenges.
Strong technical communication and reporting skills.
Manufacturing experience is considered an asset.
Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.

Responsabilités principales

Diriger la conception et le développement de composantes structurales et mécaniques pour le matériel roulant.
Réaliser et réviser les calculs, modèles et documents techniques.
Effectuer et valider les analyses structurales à l'aide de calculs manuels et d'outils FEA.
Valider les conceptions selon les normes et réglementations applicables (APTA, AAR, Transport Canada, EN/UIC).
Appliquer les normes de conception, fabrication et soudage pertinentes.
Participer aux essais, inspections, revues de conception et enquêtes terrain.
Soutenir les activités de dépannage, d'analyse des causes racines et d'actions correctives.
Assurer la conformité des livrables aux exigences de sécurité, qualité et réglementation.
Collaborer avec les équipes d'ingénierie, de production, les fournisseurs et les gestionnaires de projet.
Encadrer les ingénieurs juniors et contribuer à l'amélioration continue.

Profil recherché

Formation

Diplôme d'études collégiales ou universitaires en génie mécanique.
Membre de l'Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) ou d'un organisme provincial équivalent au Canada.

Expérience et compétences techniques

Minimum de 7 années d'expérience pertinente dans le secteur ferroviaire, le matériel roulant ou un environnement connexe.
Une expérience dans les véhicules lourds, la conception structurale ou l'ingénierie du transport constitue un atout.
Capacité à réaliser et réviser des calculs de charges, chemins de charge, forces de réaction et décisions de conception structurale.
Excellente maîtrise de l'analyse de contraintes, des calculs structuraux et des mathématiques appliquées.
Expérience avec SolidWorks ou logiciel CAO 3D équivalent.
Expérience avec des outils d'analyse structurale (HyperMesh, SimSolid ou équivalent).
Bonne compréhension des assemblages soudés, de la fatigue, des assemblages boulonnés et des structures d'acier.
Connaissance des enjeux de maintenance et du cycle de vie du matériel roulant.
Excellentes compétences en communication technique et en rédaction.
Une expérience manufacturière constitue un atout.
Le bilinguisme français-anglais constitue un atout.
