Original job description

Geophysicist

Work Location: Waterloo, ON

About Canadian Strategic Missions Corp. (CSMC) Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation is building the capabilities that will shape Canada's future in space, defence, and energy. We focus on developing dual use systems that address critical challenges here on Earth while enabling sustained human activity beyond it.

In a short time, CSMC has established real momentum. WE have secured significant government investment to advance next generation micro nuclear reactors in partnership with leading institutions, alongside expanding a portfolio of technologies designed for remote environments, national defence, and future space missions. These efforts reflect a broader ambition to deliver reliable power and critical infrastructure where it matters most.

Our work is grounded in close collaboration with government and guided by a clear sense of purpose: to build sovereign capability at a time when it has never been more important. We care deeply about execution, long term impact and earning the trust required to deliver systems that will service Canada and its allies for decades.

CSMC is a company for builders. We are a group of people drawn to hard problems, meaningful impact and the opportunity to shape systems that matter at a national and global scale. We are building a team that thrives in ambiguity, values execution, and is motivated by mission and impact.

Position Overview

CSMC is seeking a Geophysicist to support the development and application of next-generation sensing technologies for subsurface characterization and resource exploration. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in geophysical interpretation, geological modeling, and integrated dataset analysis to help evaluate and characterize subsurface environments.

You will work closely with engineers, scientists, and technology teams developing advanced sensing systems, including quantum-based sensors, helping translate geophysical data into actionable insights. This role is ideal for a geophysicist who enjoys solving complex subsurface challenges and collaborating across technical disciplines to support exploration, resource assessment, and technology validation efforts.

The selected candidate will work alongside a broad array of engineers, scientists, and several of Canada's most experienced space and advanced technology professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze and interpret geophysical datasets, including gravity, magnetic, seismic, LiDAR, and other relevant data sources to support subsurface characterization.
Integrate geophysical, geological, and spatial datasets to develop and refine subsurface models.
Identify and evaluate potential mineral and resource targets through geophysical interpretation and investigation.
Support the planning, execution, and evaluation of geophysical surveys and data acquisition programs.
Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and data specialists to validate geophysical findings and assess the performance of emerging sensing technologies.
Contribute geophysical expertise to the development of workflows, methodologies, and best practices for subsurface imaging and resource exploration.
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
Support field trials, technology demonstrations, and validation activities as required.
Stay current with developments in applied geophysics, mineral exploration, subsurface imaging, and sensing technologies.

Required Qualifications

MSc, PhD, or equivalent experience in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Geological Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
Proven experience interpreting geophysical datasets, particularly gravity, magnetic, seismic, electromagnetic, or integrated geophysical surveys.
Experience with geological and geophysical modeling in exploration, resource evaluation, or subsurface characterization applications.
Strong understanding of geophysical survey design, data quality assessment, and interpretation methodologies.
Experience working with industry-standard geophysical and GIS software platforms such as Oasis Montaj, ArcGIS, QGIS, Leapfrog, or similar tools.
Ability to integrate multiple datasets and communicate technical findings effectively.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in mining, mineral exploration, resource assessment, or environmental geophysics.
Familiarity with gravity-based exploration methods and subsurface density modeling.
Experience interpreting integrated geophysical datasets from multiple sensor platforms.
Exposure to remote sensing, advanced sensing technologies, or emerging geophysical instrumentation.
Prior field experience supporting geophysical surveys and exploration programs.
Understanding of geostatistics, data analytics, or machine learning applications in geoscience.
Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Why Join CSMC

CSMC is building technologies that will shape Canada’s future in energy, space, and national security. You’ll join a team of engineers, scientists, and mission‑driven builders who care deeply about solving hard problems that matter. We move quickly, support each other, and take pride in doing work that has real impact. Along the way, you’ll have access to competitive compensation, benefits, and equity, and the chance to grow with a company that values ownership, curiosity, and technical excellence.

Employment Eligibility
CSMC works with highly sensitive nuclear, defence, and aerospace technologies, and all roles require eligibility for federal security screening and compliance with controlled goods and export regulations. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, able to obtain and maintain Government of Canada security clearance, and eligible to meet foreign affiliation and export control requirements. These conditions are mandatory Bona Fide Occupational Requirements and reflect the need to securely develop and protect nationally significant capabilities.
