Marine Fire Systems Technician

Atlantic Canada | D&L Engineering – An Everguard Company

Put your skills to work where safety matters most.

If you’re an experienced fire protection, fire alarm, mechanical, or electrical technician with a strong safety mindset and hands-on approach, this is an opportunity to build your career in a specialized marine environment.

D&L Engineering is a national leader in fire and life safety services across commercial, industrial, and marine environments. We’re looking for a Marine Fire Systems Technician to inspect, test, service, troubleshoot, and maintain critical fire protection and life safety systems aboard vessels, in shipyards, and across marine facilities.

Why Work with D&L?

  • Competitive Pay & Overtime – Real earnings with premiums for on-call, overtime, travel, and special projects paid on top of your base wage.
  • Benefits that support you – Health, dental, vision, life & disability, employer-matched RRSP, paid holidays (Birthday, Vacation and Statutory), flex-time, and Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Marine experience that builds your career – Develop specialized skills working with marine fire suppression, detection, and alarm systems across vessels and marine environments.
  • Supportive, Safety-First Culture – Modern tools, equipment, and procedures; a team environment where safety, quality, and compliance come first.
  • Stable work with variety – Work across vessels, ports, shipyards, and marine facilities, with opportunities to take on increasingly complex technical assignments.
  • Training & professional growth – We invest helping you develop your skills across multiple fire protection disciplines through hands-on experience, ongoing training, and long-term career opportunities.

What You’ll Do

You’ll be responsible for maintaining critical fire protection and life safety systems in marine environments, including:

  • Inspect, test, service, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain marine fire fire protection and life safety systems aboard vessels at marine facilities.
  • Service and test fixed suppression systems, portable fire extinguishers, and related equipment.
  • Perform functional testing and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in system components.
  • Complete preventative maintenance, repairs, component replacements, upgrades, and commissioning.
  • Develop and apply skills across both suppression and detection and alarm systems through hands-on experience and cross-training.
  • Verify system operation and identify deficiencies that could affect vessel safety, system performance, or regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure work complies with Transport Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, NFPA, manufacturer, and marine safety requirements.
  • Complete inspection reports, service records, certifications, work orders, and compliance documentation.
  • Communicate deficiencies, findings, repairs, and recommendations to customers and vessel personnel.
  • Assist with estimating, quoting, and identifying service and repair opportunities.
  • Follow marine site safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
  • Travel to vessels, ports, shipyards, and customer sites and participate in on-call rotations as required.

This role combines hands-on technical work, troubleshooting, marine safety, customer interaction, and independent problem-solving in an environment where your work directly supports the safety of people and vessels. You’ll have the opportunity to broaden your technical capabilities across multiple fire protection systems while contributing directly to the safety of people, vessels, and marine operations.

What You Bring

  • 2+ years of field experience in fire protection, fire suppression, fire alarm, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or a related trade.
  • Experience servicing or inspecting fire protection systems; marine or shipyard experience is an asset.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort with basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Strong safety mindset, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.
  • Professional communication and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging marine environments.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to vessels, ports, shipyards, and customer sites.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to participate in on-call assignments.

Assets

  • CFAA certification, ASTT certification, or provincial fire/sprinkler technician licensing.
  • Fire suppression, fire alarm, or marine firefighting certifications.
  • Experience with CO₂, clean agent, water mist, foam, or fixed suppression systems.
  • Experience with marine fire alarm and detection systems.
  • Familiarity with Transport Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, and NFPA requirements.
  • Marine safety or shipyard experience.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance for work on government or defence-related marine vessels.

We consider all combinations of field experience, technical training, marine experience, and certifications. You don’t need to be an expert in every system on day one. We value a strong technical foundation, a willingness to learn, and the ability to develop expertise across multiple fire protection disciplines.

Build a Career – Not Just a Job

At D&L, we invest in our team’s growth. You’ll have access to ongoing training, professional development, and opportunities to build specialized expertise in marine fire protection and life safety systems.

Whether you’re bringing experience in suppression, detection and alarm, or another related trade, you can build on your existing skills while developing specialized expertise in protecting vessels, crews, and marine infrastructure.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your skilled-trades career and work in a specialized environment where safety, technical expertise, and quality matter, D&L is ready to invest in you.
