About the opportunity
Decode Talent is leading a confidential search for a Lead Product Manager to build the product function at a premium, design-led building supply manufacturer headquartered in the New York metro area.
This is not a typical e-commerce or manufacturing PM seat. The vast majority of the company's revenue comes through its design consultants, in a high-touch, human-led selling model where the online store is a small share of the business. The product you build exists to make that consultative sales journey work end to end: for the client, for the consultant, and for the teams behind them.
The company is a little over a year into a digital transformation led by a new technology leadership team, including a CTO and a head of digital transformation who owns roadmapping, QA, project management and site operations. Two major programs are underway: a brand-new customer-facing website, and the deconstruction of a core internal monolith into purpose-built tools.
The engineering, QA and delivery pillars are in place. Product is the gap. Historically, work here has been reactive and solution-first, with no pause to define the job to be done or how a build fits the larger ecosystem. You will be the person who changes that: the core thinking space that takes a problem set, solutions it at the ecosystem level, and gets the details right.
If you have ever wanted to establish how a company builds, rather than inherit it, this is that role.
What you'll own
- Establish the product discipline: the principles, rituals and artifacts that govern what gets built, why, and in what order. You will be setting the standard, not following one.
- Lead problem definition across the two flagship programs: the new customer-facing website and the rebuild of the internal admin platform that supports the consultant selling cycle.
- Own the decomposition of the internal monolith into a coherent ecosystem of tools, sequenced so each release delivers measurable ROI rather than another band-aid.
- Turn concepts into complete, buildable solutions. Ideas are not scarce here; the muscle that is missing is taking one all the way to a fully built-out system with the details right.
- Partner daily with the head of digital transformation, the CTO and a strong engineering pod, plus QA, project management and site operations, to keep roadmap, sequencing and delivery aligned.
- Challenge the hard way. Use AI tooling and AI-native thinking to find the shorter path to an outcome, so the company leapfrogs rather than grinds.
- Hold the brand bar. This is a considered, high-intent purchase with a strong point of view on design, and every tool and experience you ship needs to reflect that.
What you bring
- 7+ years in product management, with at least one stretch owning complex internal tools or platforms, not only customer-facing features.
- A track record of establishing product practice where none existed: you have introduced jobs-to-be-done framing, ROI mapping and roadmap sequencing to a team that had been working solution-first.
- Systems thinking paired with a detail obsession. You can see how a build rolls up into the larger ecosystem and you will not ship something that is 90% right.
- Experience building for a sales-assisted or consultative model, where a human advisor sits between the customer and the purchase and the tooling exists to make that person better at their job.
- Hands-on fluency with current AI tools in your own workflow, and a habit of asking whether a problem has a shorter path before committing to the long one.
- A real design sensibility. You do not need to be a designer, but you need taste, and you need to care how things look and feel.
- Comfort in legacy environments: monoliths, undocumented workflows, and a business that has grown faster than its systems.
- Low ego, high ownership. You are joining a tight, senior pod that values people who get the work done over people who talk about it.
Nice to have
- Time in a premium, luxury or design-led consumer brand, or in made-to-order and custom product businesses.
- Experience with showroom, in-home or field sales tooling: quoting, CRM, order management, scheduling or client facing systems.
- You have led or been close to a re-platforming or monolith decomposition and can speak to what went wrong as easily as what went right.
- You have shipped AI-assisted internal tooling, not just experimented with it.
