Original job description

Intermediate Mechanical Engineer (P.Eng.)

Grande Prairie, AB · On-site · Full-time, permanent

You've got a few years of design behind you and your stamp in hand. Now you want to own projects, not just size equipment on someone else's. At Design Works, intermediate engineers run their own mechanical scope from concept through construction, with a Mechanical Lead in their corner and every other discipline in-house.

Licence

P.Eng. with APEGA - newly licensed engineers welcome

Experience

Around 4–6 years of mechanical building design, including your EIT years

Reports to

Mechanical Lead

Project types

Commercial, institutional, low- and high-rise, and multi-family residential buildings across Alberta and Canada

Why this role

Grande Prairie is where Design Works started in 2014, and we're growing our mechanical team here. You'll take ownership of the mechanical design - heating, cooling, ventilation and plumbing - on commercial, institutional and multi-family residential buildings, coordinate directly with our own electrical, structural, fire protection and energy modelling teams, and help develop the junior engineers and designers working alongside you.

What you'll do

Own the mechanical design on your projects - concept, calculations, drawings, specifications and construction support.

Run load calculations and size systems in HAP or similar, and turn your design into clear drawings in Revit with our design team.

Coordinate with architects and our in-house electrical, structural, fire protection and energy modelling teams so designs are resolved before they reach site.

Be the mechanical point of contact for your clients - in meetings, in presentations and on site.

Get out on site to review construction, answer RFIs, review shop drawings and submittals, and resolve field issues.

Mentor junior engineers and designers, and review their work.

Keep your scope on budget and on schedule, working with the project manager - and spot opportunities for repeat work with the clients you serve.

What success looks like after year one

You're running the mechanical scope on several projects at once, with your Mechanical Lead reviewing rather than directing.

Architects and clients call you directly with mechanical questions.

A junior engineer or designer on your projects is noticeably stronger because of your reviews.

What you bring

Must-haves

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

P.Eng. with APEGA, in good standing - newly licensed is welcome.

Around 4–6 years of mechanical building design experience, including your EIT years.

HVAC and plumbing design experience on commercial or multi-family buildings.

Working proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD, and HAP or similar load software.

Clear written and spoken English - you'll write reports and present to clients.

Nice to have

Exposure to energy modelling or building performance work.

Registration in other provinces (EGBC, PEO, APEGS or others).

About Design Works

Design Works Engineering is a founder-led, multidisciplinary engineering firm. Since starting out in Grande Prairie in 2014, we've grown to about 120 people across offices in Canada, the US and the Philippines, and delivered close to 7,000 projects in more than 14 disciplines - structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, energy modelling, building science and more. Because nearly every discipline sits in-house, you coordinate with colleagues rather than strangers, and you see how the whole building comes together.

What we offer

Health, dental and vision benefits.

A full wellness program, including our on-site gym.

Professional development support - see the link in this post for what's included.

A real path to senior roles in a firm that's still growing.

Variety: commercial, institutional and multi-family work across Alberta and Canada.

How to apply

Apply through the link in this post with your resume. A cover letter is optional - if you send one, tell us about a mechanical system you designed and a problem you solved on it.

What to expect:

A 30-minute intro call with a member of our team.

A technical conversation with our Mechanical Lead - we'll talk through a project you've worked on.

Meet the team at our Grande Prairie office.

We get back to every applicant within one week.

Design Works Engineering is an equal-opportunity employer. Our team comes from many backgrounds, and we welcome applications from everyone, including internationally trained engineers registered with APEGA. If you need an accommodation at any stage of the hiring process, tell us, and we'll make it work.
