Original job description

Intermediate Structural Engineer (P.Eng.)

Grande Prairie, AB · On-site · Full-time, permanent

You've got a few years of design behind you and your stamp in hand. Now you want to own projects, not just run numbers on someone else's. At Design Works, intermediate engineers run their own structural scope from concept through construction, with a Director of Structural in their corner and every other discipline in-house.

Licence

P.Eng. with APEGA - newly licensed engineers welcome

Experience

Around 4–6 years of structural design in buildings, including your EIT years

Reports to

Director of Structural

Project types

Multi-family residential, commercial and institutional buildings across Alberta and Canada

Why this role

Grande Prairie is where Design Works started in 2014, and we're growing our structural team here. You'll take ownership of the structural design on multi-family residential and commercial building projects, coordinate directly with our own mechanical, electrical, civil and fire protection engineers, and help develop the junior engineers and designers working alongside you.

What you'll do

Own the structural design on your projects - concept, calculations, drawings, specifications and construction support.

Model and design in RISA-3D, ETABS and SAFE, and turn your design into clear, buildable drawings with our drafting team.

Coordinate with architects and with our in-house mechanical, electrical, civil and fire protection teams so designs are resolved before they reach site.

Be the structural point of contact for your clients - in meetings, in presentations and on site.

Get out on site to review construction, answer RFIs, review shop drawings and resolve field issues.

Mentor junior engineers and designers, and review their work.

Keep your scope on budget and on schedule, working with the project manager - and spot opportunities for repeat work with the clients you serve.

What success looks like after year one

You're running the structural scope on several projects at once, with your Director reviewing rather than directing.

Architects and clients call you directly with structural questions.

A junior engineer or designer on your projects is noticeably stronger because of your reviews.

What you bring

Must-haves

Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.

P.Eng. with APEGA, in good standing - newly licensed is welcome.

Around 4–6 years of structural design experience on buildings, including your EIT years.

Design experience on wood-frame multi-family residential buildings.

Working proficiency in RISA-3D, ETABS and SAFE, plus AutoCAD.

Clear written and spoken English - you'll write reports and present to clients.

Nice to have

Steel or mass timber design experience.

Registration in other provinces (EGBC, PEO, APEGS or others).

About Design Works

Design Works Engineering is a founder-led, multidisciplinary engineering firm. Since starting out in Grande Prairie in 2014, we've grown to about 120 people across offices in Canada, the US and the Philippines, and delivered close to 7,000 projects in more than 14 disciplines - structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, energy modelling, building science and more. Because nearly every discipline sits in-house, you coordinate with colleagues rather than strangers, and you see how the whole building comes together.

What we offer

Health, dental and vision benefits.

A full wellness program, including our on-site gym.

Professional development support - see the link in this post for what's included.

A real path to senior roles in a firm that's still growing.

Variety: multi-family, commercial and institutional work across Alberta and Canada.

How to apply

Apply through the link in this post with your resume. A cover letter is optional - if you send one, tell us about a structure you designed and the decision on it you're proudest of.

What to expect:

A 30-minute intro call with a member of our team.

A technical conversation with our Director of Structural - we'll talk through a project you've worked on.

Meet the team at our Grande Prairie office.

We get back to every applicant within one week.

Design Works Engineering is an equal-opportunity employer. Our team comes from many backgrounds, and we welcome applications from everyone, including internationally trained engineers registered with APEGA. If you need an accommodation at any stage of the hiring process, tell us, and we'll make it work.
