Original job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer (P.Eng.)

Grande Prairie, AB · On-site · Full-time, permanent

Grande Prairie is where Design Works started in 2014, and we're building out our mechanical team here - we want a senior engineer to help shape it. This is a technical leadership role: you'll be the mechanical authority on your projects, set the standards the team designs to, and mentor the engineers who'll carry them forward.

Licence

P.Eng. with APEGA, in good standing

Experience

8+ years of mechanical building design, including a senior or lead role

Reports to

Mechanical Lead

Project types

Commercial, institutional, low- and high-rise, and multi-family residential buildings across Alberta and Canada

Why this role

You'll lead mechanical design - heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing and controls - on commercial, institutional, low- and high-rise and multi-family residential buildings. Our electrical, structural, fire protection and energy modelling teams are in-house, so coordination happens inside one firm instead of across four consultants.

What you'll do

Lead the mechanical scope through every project phase, meeting code, budget, schedule and client requirements.

Be the technical authority for heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing and controls on your projects.

Run and review load calculations (HAP or similar), and review and approve drawings, specifications and design documents.

Mentor intermediate and junior engineers and designers through design reviews and day-to-day guidance.

Build and improve our mechanical standards, procedures and QA/QC practices.

Represent the mechanical discipline with clients, AHJs, suppliers and contractors.

Support construction - review shop drawings and submittals, visit sites and resolve field issues.

Help win work - proposals, fee estimates and client relationships.

What success looks like after year one

The mechanical standards and QA/QC checks you've set are in use on every Grande Prairie project.

Intermediate engineers on the team bring their questions to you first - and need you less by year-end.

You've shaped proposals and fee estimates on new work, and clients ask for you by name.

What you bring

Must-haves

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

P.Eng. with APEGA, in good standing.

8+ years designing mechanical systems for commercial, institutional and multi-family buildings.

Experience in a senior or lead role, including mentoring others and reviewing their work.

Strong working knowledge of Alberta's building codes and mechanical standards.

Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD, and HAP or similar load software.

Confident with clients and comfortable supporting business development.

Nice to have

Registration in other provinces (EGBC, PEO, APEGS or others).

Exposure to energy modelling or building performance work.

About Design Works

Design Works Engineering is a founder-led, multidisciplinary engineering firm. Since starting out in Grande Prairie in 2014, we've grown to about 120 people across offices in Canada, the US and the Philippines, and delivered close to 7,000 projects in more than 14 disciplines - structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, energy modelling, building science and more. Because nearly every discipline sits in-house, you coordinate with colleagues rather than strangers, and you see how the whole building comes together.

What we offer

A leadership role shaping and growing the Grande Prairie mechanical team.

Health, dental and vision benefits.

A full wellness program, including our on-site gym.

Professional development support - see the link in this post for what's included.

High-impact projects across Alberta and Canada, and long-term growth.

How to apply

Apply through the link in this post with your resume. A cover letter is optional - if you send one, tell us about a mechanical system you designed and a problem you solved on it.

What to expect:

A 30-minute intro call with a member of our team.

A technical conversation with our Mechanical Lead - we'll talk through a project you've worked on.

Meet the team at our Grande Prairie office.

We get back to every applicant within one week.

Design Works Engineering is an equal-opportunity employer. Our team comes from many backgrounds, and we welcome applications from everyone, including internationally trained engineers registered with APEGA. If you need an accommodation at any stage of the hiring process, tell us, and we'll make it work.
