Original job description

Senior Mechanical Technologist

Grande Prairie, AB · On-site · Full-time, permanent

You've spent years turning engineers' designs into mechanical drawings that contractors can build from. Here, you'll lead how our mechanical drawings get made - setting the standard, mentoring the technologists coming up behind you, and working side by side with engineers from every discipline under one roof.

Credentials

Diploma in mechanical engineering technology; C.E.T. (ASET) an asset

Experience

8+ years of mechanical drafting, modelling and design on buildings

Reports to

Mechanical Lead

Project types

Commercial, institutional, low- and high-rise, and multi-family residential buildings across Alberta and Canada

Why this role

Grande Prairie is where Design Works started in 2014, and we're growing our mechanical team here. You'll lead mechanical drawing production - HVAC, plumbing and drainage - on commercial, institutional and multi-family residential buildings, modelling in Revit and coordinating with our in-house electrical, structural and fire protection teams so drawings go out complete and clash-free.

What you'll do

Lead mechanical drawing production on your projects - from first model to the issued-for-construction set.

Model and lay out in Revit and AutoCAD - ductwork, piping, plumbing and equipment.

Turn engineers' sketches and calculations into clear, buildable drawings, flagging gaps and conflicts before they reach site.

Coordinate with architects and our in-house electrical, structural and fire protection teams to catch clashes early.

Set and maintain drafting standards - templates, a details library and QA/QC checks for the mechanical team.

Mentor junior technologists and drafters, and review their work.

Support construction - prepare revisions, check shop drawings and submittals against the design, and visit site when needed.

What success looks like after year one

Your details and templates are the ones the mechanical team reaches for first.

Drawing sets on your projects go out with fewer RFIs and fewer revisions.

Junior technologists on the team produce cleaner sets because of your reviews.

What you bring

Must-haves

Diploma in mechanical engineering technology.

8+ years of mechanical drafting, modelling and design on buildings.

Advanced Revit and AutoCAD skills.

Experience laying out HVAC, plumbing and drainage systems.

Working knowledge of the codes that govern mechanical drawings in Alberta.

Experience reviewing others' drawings and guiding junior staff.

Nice to have

C.E.T. with ASET.

Experience with clash detection or BIM coordination tools (e.g., Navisworks).

About Design Works

Design Works Engineering is a founder-led, multidisciplinary engineering firm. Since starting out in Grande Prairie in 2014, we've grown to about 120 people across offices in Canada, the US and the Philippines, and delivered close to 7,000 projects in more than 14 disciplines - structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, energy modelling, building science and more. Because nearly every discipline sits in-house, you coordinate with colleagues rather than strangers, and you see how the whole building comes together.

What we offer

Health, dental and vision benefits.

A full wellness program, including our on-site gym.

Professional development support - see the link in this post for what's included.

A senior role where your standards shape how the whole mechanical team draws.

How to apply
