Original job description

Senior Structural Engineer (P.Eng.)

Grande Prairie, AB · On-site · Full-time, permanent

You've designed enough buildings to know what good looks like. Now you want to be the engineer the team checks with - engineer of record on the harder projects, reviewing others' work and shaping how our structural team designs, with every other discipline in-house.

Licence

P.Eng. with APEGA, in good standing

Experience

7+ years of structural design on buildings

Reports to

Director of Structural

Project types

Multi-family residential, commercial and institutional buildings across Alberta and Canada

Why this role

Grande Prairie is where Design Works started in 2014, and we're growing our structural team here. You'll lead structural design on multi-family residential, commercial and institutional buildings, act as engineer of record, and work alongside our own mechanical, electrical, civil and fire protection engineers, so coordination happens inside one firm.

What you'll do

Lead the structural design as engineer of record - concept, analysis, drawings, specifications and construction support.

Solve the harder problems - lateral systems, transfer structures and mixed wood, steel and concrete buildings.

Review and stamp calculations and drawings prepared by intermediate and junior engineers.

Coordinate with architects and our in-house mechanical, electrical, civil and fire protection teams so designs are resolved before they reach site.

Be the structural lead for your clients - in meetings, in presentations and on site.

Support construction - shop drawings, RFIs, site reviews and field issues.

Mentor engineers and technologists, and help build our structural standards.

Help win work - proposals, fee estimates and client relationships.

What success looks like after year one

You're engineer of record on several active projects, running them with little oversight.

Intermediate engineers bring their designs to you for review - and need fewer changes by year-end.

You've shaped proposals and fee estimates on new structural work.

What you bring

Must-haves

Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.

P.Eng. with APEGA, in good standing.

7+ years of structural design experience on buildings.

Design experience in wood, steel and concrete.

Proficiency in RISA-3D, ETABS and SAFE (or similar), plus AutoCAD.

Strong working knowledge of the Alberta Building Code and CSA design standards.

Clear written and spoken English - you'll write reports and present to clients.

Nice to have

Experience leading a team or mentoring junior engineers.

Mass timber or post-tensioned concrete experience.

Registration in other provinces (EGBC, PEO, APEGS or others).

About Design Works

Design Works Engineering is a founder-led, multidisciplinary engineering firm. Since starting out in Grande Prairie in 2014, we've grown to about 120 people across offices in Canada, the US and the Philippines, and delivered close to 7,000 projects in more than 14 disciplines - structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, energy modelling, building science and more. Because nearly every discipline sits in-house, you coordinate with colleagues rather than strangers, and you see how the whole building comes together.

What we offer

Health, dental and vision benefits.

A full wellness program, including our on-site gym.

Professional development support - see the link in this post for what's included.

How to apply
