Original job description

Senior Structural Technologist

Edmonton, AB · On-site · Full-time, permanent

You've spent years turning engineers' designs into drawings that contractors can build from. Here, you'll lead how our structural drawings get made - setting the standard, mentoring the technologists coming up behind you, and working side by side with engineers from every discipline under one roof.

Credentials

Diploma in civil or structural engineering technology; C.E.T. (ASET) an asset

Experience

8+ years of structural drafting, modelling and detailing on buildings

Reports to

Director of Structural

Project types

Multi-family residential, commercial and institutional buildings across Alberta and Canada

Why this role

We're growing our structural team in Edmonton. You'll lead structural drawing production on multi-family residential, commercial and institutional buildings - modelling in Revit, detailing connections and coordinating with our in-house mechanical, electrical and civil teams so drawings go out complete and clash-free.

What you'll do

Lead structural drawing production on your projects - from first model to the issued-for-construction set.

Model and detail in Revit and AutoCAD - foundations, framing, connections and reinforcing.

Turn engineers' sketches and calculations into clear, buildable drawings, flagging gaps before they reach site.

Coordinate with architects and our in-house mechanical, electrical and civil teams to catch clashes early.

Set and maintain drafting standards - templates, a details library and QA/QC checks for the structural team.

Mentor junior technologists and drafters, and review their work.

Support construction - prepare revisions, check shop drawings against the design, and visit site when needed.

What success looks like after year one

Your details and templates are the ones the structural team reaches for first.

Drawing sets on your projects go out with fewer RFIs and fewer revisions.

Junior technologists on the team produce cleaner sets because of your reviews.

What you bring

Must-haves

Diploma in civil or structural engineering technology.

8+ years of structural drafting, modelling and detailing on buildings.

Advanced Revit and AutoCAD skills.

Detailing experience in wood, steel and concrete.

Working knowledge of the Alberta Building Code as it applies to structural drawings.

Experience reviewing others' drawings and guiding junior staff.

Nice to have

C.E.T. with ASET.

Experience with clash detection or BIM coordination tools (e.g., Navisworks).

About Design Works

Design Works Engineering is a founder-led, multidisciplinary engineering firm. Since starting out in Grande Prairie in 2014, we've grown to about 120 people across offices in Canada, the US and the Philippines, and delivered close to 7,000 projects in more than 14 disciplines - structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, energy modelling, building science and more. Because nearly every discipline sits in-house, you coordinate with colleagues rather than strangers, and you see how the whole building comes together.

What we offer
