Our mission is to influence supply and build demand for the benefit of locals, communities and visitors through leading research, alignment with public and private sectors, and marketing Canada nationally and abroad. We seek diverse, ingenious thinkers teeming with intellectual curiosity and a deep desire to grow Canada’s tourism industry – strengthening the socio-cultural, environmental and economic vitality tourism brings to Canada.

About the role:

Reporting to the Manager, Finance, the Senior Corporate Accountant supports the accurate, timely and consistent delivery of Destination Canada’s financial reporting and period-end close activities. The role prepares and reviews financial statements, supporting schedules and analysis; coordinates audit requirements; researches accounting standards and government directives; and identifies opportunities to strengthen financial processes and reporting.

The Senior Corporate Accountant also provides functional guidance to Corporate Accountants, develops and delivers financial training, and supports staff across the organization in understanding and applying financial policies and procedures. The role also provides analysis and advice on accounting and financial matters.

Key accountabilities

  • Financial Reporting: Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, notes, schedules, reconciliations, analysis and reporting commentary in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and established deadlines.
  • Period-End Close: Coordinates assigned period-end close activities and works with Corporate Accountants to support the complete, accurate and timely preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, adjustments and supporting documentation.
  • Audit Coordination: Coordinates working papers, schedules, supporting documentation and auditor requests for interim and year-end audits; tracks outstanding items and escalates complex accounting or audit matters to the Manager, Finance.
  • Accounting Standards and Policy: Maintains current knowledge of applicable accounting standards and federal government directives, researches new or changing requirements, assesses potential implications and supports the implementation of required accounting policies and processes.
  • Financial Controls and Compliance: Supports the consistent application of financial policies, procedures and controls; identifies recurring or higher-risk issues, recommends practical improvements and escalates significant matters as appropriate.
  • Training and Guidance: Provides day-to-day accounting guidance to Corporate Accountants, supports onboarding and training, develops and maintains clear financial instructions and learning materials, and delivers training to finance and non-finance staff.
  • Systems and Process Improvement: Acts as a finance super-user for applicable ERP, expense management and financial systems; supports troubleshooting, user guidance, process changes and system testing, and identifies opportunities to improve the accuracy and efficiency of financial processes.
  • Financial Analysis and Advisory Support: Prepares financial analysis, forecasts, ad hoc reports and other decision-support information, and provides practical financial guidance to management and assigned business areas on financial processes, requirements and related matters.

What you need

  • A recognized professional accounting designation and post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years of relevant post-designation accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting and the preparation of financial statements, notes, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Financial reporting and accounting standards: demonstrated knowledge of financial accounting and reporting principles, including the ability to interpret and apply Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).
  • Audit support: experience preparing audit working papers and supporting interim or year-end audit processes, including responding to information requests and resolving accounting questions.
  • Financial analysis and judgment: ability to analyze financial information, investigate unusual or unexpected results, identify issues and develop practical, well-supported recommendations.
  • Financial advice and communication: ability to explain accounting requirements, financial information and policy considerations clearly to finance and non-finance audiences and provide practical guidance appropriate to the situation.
  • Training and knowledge sharing: experience developing or delivering training, instructions or other guidance that helps others understand and consistently apply financial processes and policies.
  • Planning and prioritization: ability to organize multiple activities and deadlines, maintain accuracy during peak reporting periods and determine when issues require escalation.
  • Financial systems and technology: experience using an ERP or comparable financial management system and advanced proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office applications used for financial reporting and analysis.
  • Collaboration and issue resolution: ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders across the organization, navigate differing perspectives constructively and remain effective when addressing time-sensitive or complex financial matters.

It would be great if you also had
