Original job description

Why Deveraux

ABOUT

At Deveraux Group of Companies, we create amenity-rich apartment communities that people are proud to call home, and we care for them with a hospitality mindset. Today, we have more than 10,000 apartment homes under management and in development across Western Canada and Ontario, where we are expanding our presence. From design and construction to the day-to-day resident experience, our team is driven by quality, innovation, and a genuine commitment to the people we serve. Join us and help shape the next chapter of our growth.

CULTURE

We foster a dynamic, people-first culture built on accountability, inclusion, respect, and community connection. We embrace diverse perspectives, encourage entrepreneurial thinking, and empower team members to make a meaningful impact. Through formal training and opportunities to take on unique and challenging work, our employees are encouraged to take initiative, create value, and contribute to building exceptional communities across Canada.

The Opportunity

The Deveraux Group of Companies is seeking an experienced and motivated Controller to join our Calgary-based finance team. Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Finance and Accounting, this is an exciting opportunity to take on a key leadership role within a dynamic and expanding organization with a diverse portfolio of businesses and real estate investments.

As Controller, you will oversee financial reporting, month-end close, budgeting, tax compliance, and internal controls for a portfolio of entities across the Group. Beyond managing the numbers, you will have the opportunity to influence how we operate, improve processes, strengthen financial reporting, and help shape the continued evolution of our finance function.

We are looking for a hands-on finance leader who combines strong technical expertise with a practical, solutions-oriented mindset. Someone who enjoys tackling challenges, developing people, and finding smarter ways to get things done. Leading a team of two direct reports and collaborating closely with operational leaders, you will have the autonomy to make a difference and the opportunity to grow alongside our organization.

What we offer...

Attractive compensation package that is competitive in the industry
Comprehensive benefits program comprising life, long-term disability, and extended medical, dental, and vision coverage
Registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) with a matching Deveraux-funded deferred profit-sharing plan (DPSP)
Transparent and rewarding workplace dedicated to supporting your professional development

What you bring...

CPA designation with a proven track record of success in financial leadership
8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years of experience leading and mentoring accounting staff
Strong technical accounting knowledge and a hands-on, detail-oriented approach, with the experience to diagnose issues and recommend solutions
Demonstrated experience building or improving month-end close processes, ideally in a multi-entity environment
Experience with accounting system conversions or integrations with operational systems is an asset
Advanced Excel skills and experience working with accounting software (QuickBooks Desktop and Sage Intacct experience is an asset)
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with a proactive approach
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset
Comfort working in a growing organization where processes are still being built, with a commitment to continuous improvement

You will...

Oversee all accounting operations for assigned entities within the Group, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements and management reporting
Build and refine month-end close processes for assigned entities, including close checklists, account reconciliations, and review procedures, to deliver a consistent and timely close
Lead financial planning processes for assigned entities, including budgeting and forecasting
Monitor cash flows across entities and coordinate loan requests or repayments to support liquidity
Review and approve vendor payments, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies
Review payroll submissions for accuracy and alignment with employee agreements and company policies
Ensure compliance with tax regulations and oversee the preparation and review of GST returns and corporate tax filings
Prepare ad hoc reporting and analysis to support business needs
Work with operational teams to identify gaps in workflows and recommend practical fixes
Identify improvement opportunities and lead finance initiatives focused on automation, process simplification, enhanced controls and documentation
Play a key role in the conversion to Sage Intacct and lead future integrations with Square and other operational systems
Lead, mentor, and develop two direct reports, including recruiting, onboarding, and training team members as needed, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement

Additional Information

You must be legally eligible to work in Canada (e.g., be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or possess a valid work permit) and provide a satisfactory Criminal Background Check.

The Deveraux Group of Companies is an Equal Opportunity employer. We foster a diverse and inclusive workplace where individuals, regardless of disability, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, colour, religion, age, nationality, or ethnic origin, have equitable access to employment, professional opportunities, and advancement. Our recruitment practices are merit-based, ensuring that every candidate is evaluated fairly based on their qualifications, skills, and potential to positively impact our team.
