Job Description: QE Lead / Senior QA Automation Engineer

Position: QE Lead / Senior QA Engineer / QE Analyst

Work Model: Hybrid – 2 days per week in the office

Work Location: Toronto, Ontario

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Quality Engineering (QE) Lead / Senior QA Automation Engineer with strong hands-on experience in test automation, Python programming, API testing, database testing, and CI/CD practices.

The ideal candidate should have approximately 2–3 years of hands-on Python automation experience and a strong understanding of automation frameworks, software testing methodologies, and quality engineering practices.

The team primarily works with the Python Robot Framework. Candidates with solid Python automation experience but limited Robot Framework exposure will also be considered, as training can be provided.

This position requires an independent QA professional who can take ownership of automation activities, develop and execute test scripts, troubleshoot issues, and work effectively with minimal supervision.

Important: Candidates must demonstrate practical, hands-on testing experience rather than theoretical knowledge or limited exposure to automation, API, and database testing.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain, and execute automated test scripts using Python.
• Build and enhance test automation solutions using Python-based automation frameworks.
• Work with the Robot Framework for developing and executing automated test cases.
• Perform functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Conduct API testing to validate service integrations, endpoints, request/response payloads, and application functionality.
• Perform database testing, including SQL queries, data validation, backend verification, and data integrity testing.
• Integrate automated test scripts into CI/CD pipelines.
• Work with Git for source code management, including code commits, pushes, pulls, merges, and branch management.
• Identify, investigate, document, and troubleshoot application defects.
• Collaborate with developers, product owners, business analysts, and Agile team members.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, test planning, and defect triage.
• Develop and maintain test documentation, automation scripts, and test execution reports.
• Identify opportunities to improve test coverage, automation efficiency, and overall quality engineering processes.
• Independently manage testing activities and deliver high-quality results with minimal supervision.

Mandatory Technical Skills

1. Python Automation

• 2–3 years of hands-on Python automation experience preferred.
• Strong Python programming and scripting knowledge.
• Experience developing, executing, debugging, and maintaining automation scripts.
• Ability to independently write automation code rather than simply execute existing scripts.

2. Test Automation Framework

• Experience with test automation frameworks.
• Knowledge of Python Robot Framework is preferred.
• Candidates with strong Python automation experience in other frameworks can be considered.
• Ability to learn and transition to Robot Framework.

3. API Testing

• Strong hands-on experience with API testing.
• Experience validating REST APIs, HTTP methods, request/response payloads, status codes, and JSON responses.
• Familiarity with API testing tools such as Postman or REST Assured.
• Ability to independently create and execute API test scenarios.

4. Database Testing

• Hands-on experience with SQL and database testing.
• Ability to write and execute SQL queries.
• Experience validating backend data, performing data comparisons, and verifying data integrity.
• Understanding of database validation and backend testing concepts.

5. CI/CD and Git

• Basic to intermediate understanding of CI/CD pipelines.
• Hands-on experience with Git, including code commits, pushes, pulls, and merges.
• Experience working with source code repositories and integrating automation scripts into build or deployment pipelines.
• Familiarity with Jenkins, GitHub, or GitLab is an advantage.

Required Qualifications

• Strong experience in Quality Assurance and Software Test Automation.
• Approximately 2–3 years of Python automation experience preferred.
• Demonstrable hands-on experience in API testing and database testing.
• Experience with test automation frameworks.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD and Git.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
• Ability to independently develop and troubleshoot automation scripts.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to clearly explain previous projects, technical contributions, automation frameworks, and testing approaches.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.

Preferred Skills

• Python Robot Framework.
• Selenium / PyTest.
• Postman or REST API testing tools.
• SQL and backend database validation.
• Jenkins / GitHub / GitLab.
• Experience in enterprise application testing.
• Financial services or banking domain experience.

Interview Process

Round 1 – Technical Panel Interview

• One-hour interview conducted through MS Teams.
• Interview panel includes Hiring Manager, the Automation Lead, and an Agile Pod member.
• Focus areas include Python automation, API testing, database testing, CI/CD, Git, and practical project experience.

Round 2 – In-Person Interview

• A second-round interview may be required in person

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a strong hands-on QA Automation Engineer who has independently developed and maintained automation scripts, performed API and database testing, and worked with CI/CD pipelines and Git.

Candidates must be able to clearly explain their technical contributions, demonstrate practical knowledge through scenario-based questions, and take ownership of automation and testing activities without constant supervision.

The hiring team is prioritizing quality over quantity. Candidates with only theoretical knowledge, limited automation exposure, or weak API/database testing experience should not be submitted.
