Overview

We are seeking a Team Manager – Buildings, Eastern Ontario to play a key leadership role in the next stage of Dillon’s growth in Eastern Ontario.

Based in either our Ottawa or Kingston office, the successful candidate will help build Dillon’s local buildings presence, develop lasting client relationships, grow a multidisciplinary team, and bring together the full breadth of our architecture and engineering capabilities to serve the Eastern Ontario market.

This is not simply a role leading an established team. It is an opportunity to help build one. Working across Dillon’s Building Infrastructure Practice, Dillon Architecture Limited, FBM Architecture Limited, and David Nairne & Associates, the successful candidate will help shape where we grow, develop the relationships and opportunities that support that growth, and build the local capabilities needed to deliver for our clients.

The successful candidate will combine strong client and market instincts with people leadership, multidisciplinary project experience and technical credibility in the buildings industry. They will establish a strong local presence and sense of team in Ottawa and Kingston while connecting local staff, clients and opportunities with Dillon’s broader technical disciplines and businesses across Canada.

While Eastern Ontario will be the primary focus of the role, the successful candidate will also contribute to Dillon’s broader buildings growth initiatives across Canada, including opportunities in Northern Canada.

About Dillon

Dillon Consulting Limited (Dillon) is a proudly Canadian, 100% employee-owned professional consulting firm specializing in planning, engineering, environmental science, and management. With over 26 offices and more than 1,400 employees across Canada, we offer a wide range of services related to building and improving facilities and infrastructure, protecting the environment, and developing communities.

At Dillon, we strive to remain at the forefront of technology and innovation and thrive on interdisciplinary collaboration, empowering our people to challenge conventional thinking and build careers focused on creating a lasting impact in our communities. We are committed to ongoing professional development and celebrate the unique perspectives that each team member brings to the table.

Employee ownership is available to all Dillon team members, and over 60% of our employees own shares in Dillon. Through employee ownership, we return the financial benefit created by our project work to the very people who created that value. Because we are an employee-owned firm, your voice will be an essential part of our shared success.

Dillon has been listed as one of Canada's Best Managed Companies for 20 years in a row and has the distinction of being a Platinum Club member in this program.

Responsibilities

About the Position

Market Growth & Client Development

  • Help develop and execute Dillon's growth strategy for buildings in Eastern Ontario, with a focus on establishing a strong and sustainable presence in the Ottawa and Kingston markets.
  • Develop, strengthen and expand long-term relationships with existing and prospective clients across priority markets, including community, healthcare, institutional, education, municipal and federal facilities.
  • Proactively identify emerging client needs and market opportunities and position Dillon to pursue and win profitable, repeat work.
  • Establish Dillon as a trusted advisor by engaging with clients early, understanding their broader objectives and connecting them with the right expertise from across the organization.
  • Provide leadership in developing pursuit strategies, proposals and statements of qualification for strategic opportunities.
  • Build Dillon's visibility within the Eastern Ontario buildings market through client engagement, industry participation, professional networks and community involvement.
  • Support broader Dillon growth initiatives, including facilities and infrastructure opportunities in Northern Canada.

Integrated Buildings Leadership

  • Bring together Dillon's engineering and architectural capabilities to develop integrated solutions and a coordinated market presence in Eastern Ontario.

  • Work collaboratively across Dillon's Buildings Infrastructure Practice, Dillon Architecture Limited, FBM Architecture Limited and David Nairne & Associates to identify shared clients, markets and pursuits where our combined capabilities create a differentiated offering.

  • Help develop a coordinated approach to client development, recruitment and capability building across Dillon's engineering and architectural businesses.

  • Connect clients and opportunities with the people and capabilities best positioned to serve them, regardless of discipline, geography or organizational boundaries.

  • Build strong relationships across Dillon and actively promote collaboration between architecture, mechanical, electrical, structural and other complementary disciplines.

  • Help ensure that growth in Eastern Ontario strengthens, and is strengthened by, Dillon's broader national buildings capabilities.

People Leadership & Team Building

  • Build and lead a strong, locally connected multidisciplinary buildings team in Eastern Ontario.
  • Develop and execute a team growth plan in collaboration with Practice and Discipline leadership, identifying capability needs and recruiting strategically as the local business grows.
  • Provide direct leadership, management and oversight for team members while fostering a strong sense of community, belonging and shared purpose across Ottawa and Kingston.
  • Mentor, coach and support team members in their professional growth, career progression and development.
  • Create an inclusive, collaborative and entrepreneurial team culture focused on client service, technical excellence, accountability and shared success.
  • Work closely with Dillon's Mechanical, Electrical and Structural Discipline Leaders to ensure local staff remain strongly connected to their disciplines and have access to appropriate technical mentorship, development and innovation.
  • Support workforce and succession planning, performance management and resource planning as the team grows.

Project & Technical Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for multidisciplinary buildings projects, drawing on Dillon's technical leaders and specialists to ensure appropriate expertise, quality and project delivery.
  • Lead or support major and strategically important assignments, particularly where senior client engagement or multidisciplinary coordination is required.
  • Promote effective project management, including appropriate planning, resource allocation, financial management, quality management and risk management.
  • Facilitate effective coordination between architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, environmental and other disciplines involved in project delivery.
  • Champion technical excellence and Dillon's established quality management processes while recognizing and relying upon the appropriate technical authorities within each discipline.
  • Encourage innovation and the thoughtful adoption of digital delivery, BIM, automation and AI-enabled tools to improve project outcomes and create greater value for clients.

Learning, Development & Industry Leadership

  • Support the development of staff through coaching, mentoring and career planning, working with the appropriate Discipline Leaders and technical specialists.
  • Maintain an active commitment to personal professional development and continuous learning.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration across offices, disciplines and Dillon's broader buildings businesses.
  • Contribute to Dillon's profile through participation in relevant industry, professional and community organizations.
  • Stay connected to evolving client needs, industry trends, technologies and delivery approaches affecting the buildings sector.

Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, or eligible for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural/Civil Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Approximately 10 or more years of progressive experience in consulting, engineering or the buildings industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within the buildings, facilities or infrastructure sector.
  • LEED AP, PMP, CEM or other relevant professional designations would be considered assets.

Experience

The successful candidate will bring a combination of business leadership, people leadership, client relationships and technical credibility. We recognize that no individual will be an expert in every discipline represented within an integrated buildings team.

We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate:

  • A track record of building or growing a consulting business, team or market, including developing client relationships, identifying opportunities and winning work.
  • Strong existing relationships within Eastern Ontario, or demonstrated ability to establish credibility and build meaningful relationships in a new market.
  • Demonstrated success leading, developing and growing professional teams.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary buildings or facilities projects and an understanding of how architectural, mechanical, electrical and structural disciplines come together to deliver successful projects.
  • Strong business acumen and an entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to translate market opportunities into sustainable growth.
  • The ability to work effectively across disciplines, business units and organizational boundaries and bring diverse teams together around shared clients and opportunities.
  • Strong client leadership skills and the ability to operate as a trusted advisor to senior client representatives.
  • The ability to balance local market needs with the capabilities, standards and priorities of a broader national organization.
  • Strong communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • A collaborative, curious and adaptable leadership style.
  • Experience working within an integrated architecture and engineering environment, or successfully partnering with architectural practices, would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in community, healthcare, institutional, education, municipal, federal/DND or related facilities markets would be considered an asset.

What Success Looks Like

Initially, success will mean establishing strong local client and industry relationships, connecting Dillon's existing architecture and engineering capabilities around a common Eastern Ontario market strategy, and helping identify the people and capabilities needed to grow.

Over time, the Team Manager will build a locally based multidisciplinary team capable of delivering integrated buildings services while remaining strongly connected to Dillon's broader technical disciplines and businesses. Success will be reflected in durable relationships with priority clients, a strong and engaged local team, increased collaboration across Dillon's architecture and engineering businesses, and a sustainable portfolio of profitable, repeat work.

The longer-term intent is to establish a meaningful multidisciplinary presence in Eastern Ontario rather than simply add isolated hires. That aligns with the growth strategy discussed in September, where recruitment would initially occur through existing teams and the local team would develop around the right leader.
