Original job description

Senior Accountant | $80,000–$100,000 | St. Catharines (Hybrid)

There comes a point in public accounting where being good at preparing the file isn’t really enough anymore.

You want to own more of it.

This opportunity is with an established CPA firm in St. Catharines, working across a varied portfolio of privately held businesses, owner managed companies and not-for-profit organizations.

You’ll still be hands on, but you’ll also have more responsibility for engagements, clients and junior staff, without having to wait until Manager level before you’re trusted with any of it.

Why consider it:

  • $80,000–$100,000 salary
  • Hybrid working
  • St. Catharines location
  • Broad mix of compilation, review and audit work
  • Corporate and personal tax exposure
  • Direct client contact
  • Work closely with Managers and Partners
  • Opportunity to review and support junior staff
  • Variety across privately held businesses and not-for-profits
  • Exposure to advisory and tax planning work
  • Clear progression toward Manager level

What you’ll be doing:

  • Prepare compilation and review engagements from start to finish
  • Assist with audit engagements across a variety of clients
  • Prepare financial statements and year end working papers
  • Prepare corporate T2 and personal T1 tax returns
  • Assist with trust and other tax filings where required
  • Identify accounting and tax issues during engagements
  • Deal directly with clients to gather information and resolve queries
  • Respond to CRA correspondence and information requests
  • Assist with tax planning for owner-managed businesses
  • Review bookkeeping, adjusting entries and account reconciliations
  • Review work prepared by junior accountants
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members
  • Manage multiple files and deadlines throughout the year
  • Work directly with Managers and Partners on more complex matters
  • Build toward taking greater ownership of engagements and client relationships

What they’re looking for:

  • 3+ years of Canadian public accounting experience
  • Strong compilation and review engagement experience
  • Some audit exposure would be useful
  • Experience preparing T2 and T1 tax returns
  • Good knowledge of ASPE
  • Previous experience dealing directly with clients
  • CPA designation or actively progressing toward completion
  • Experience reviewing or supporting junior staff would be an asset
  • CaseWare experience useful
  • Comfortable managing several engagements at the same time
