Original job description

The District of Saanich is the largest municipality in beautiful Greater Victoria, blending both the urban and rural environment and home to approximately 124,000 citizens. Employing more than 1,500 members, our greatest asset is a high performing workforce.

The Water Resources Division of Saanich Engineering provides professional services for the management of the municipal sanitary sewer, potable water and storm drainage systems. We are recruiting an experienced Engineering Technician V to join our fast paced and diverse team. The ideal candidate is either an experienced technologist or an engineering-in-training possessing a sound technical foundation, strong project management skills, is well organized, has strong communication skills and an appetite for learning.

The work of the Engineering Technician V involves performing civil

engineering work at a semi-professional level including:

project scoping, preparing designs or managing designs prepared by consultants and delivering projects from the concept phase through to construction completion as the internal project manager;
responding to public inquiries;
providing technical support to internal construction crews and liaising with/making recommendations to the Engineering of Record regarding field design changes; and
mentoring junior staff.

This role works under the guidance of professional engineers in the team; is afforded an appropriate level of independence in completing work assignments and an extraordinary variation in work tasks that will expand your functional knowledge of municipal infrastructure management in local government setting.

Requirements include a two-year diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution; a minimum of 6 years of directly related experience; registered as an AScT with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC; a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence. Alternate qualifications will also be considered, such as a University Degree in a related field of Engineering and four (4) years of work experience, and eligible for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC as an Engineer-In-Training.

Those who may not specifically meet the full extent of the listed qualifications are encouraged to apply, as the District may consider the totality of education, experience and training as an equivalent.

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (35 hours per week), will be eligible for participation in the District’s modified work week program. Flexible working hours and remote work are also available subject to operational needs.

This is a C.U.P.E. Local 2011 position with a wage of $55.71 per hour (2026 rate) and an excellent benefits package. Job description and competition information can be found at www.saanich.ca. Please apply by October 6, 2026, quoting competition 26240. As a component of the selection process, testing will be conducted. We thank all applicants for applying. Only those under consideration will be contacted.

The District of Saanich is proud to once again be recognized as one of BC’s Top Employers for 2026. As an inclusive, supportive, and high performing organization, we are committed to fostering a workplace that reflects the diversity of the community we serve. We aim to attract and retain passionate, skilled individuals from all backgrounds, demographics, and life experiences, and we are dedicated to creating an environment where everyone can contribute and thrive. If you require an accommodation at any stage of the recruitment process, please contact accessibilityHR@saanich.ca in confidence. We are here to support your full participation.
