Original job description
Location: Downtown Vancouver – Full-time
DJO Family Law is a boutique family law litigation firm in downtown Vancouver. We act on complex matters involving business and corporate interests, income determination, support, property division, valuations, parenting disputes, and tax-related issues.
We are seeking an associate lawyer who wants to build or continue a long-term practice in family law litigation.
We are ideally seeking a lawyer with at least three years' call who can manage files with increasing independence. Family law experience is strongly preferred, but we will consider candidates from other litigation backgrounds who have strong advocacy skills and an interest in building a family law practice.
The successful candidate will be capable of working independently, exercising sound judgment, and taking increasing ownership of files based on their level of experience.
The Role
Depending on your experience, responsibilities may include:
- Managing family law litigation files from intake through resolution
- Drafting pleadings, applications, affidavits, financial statements, Scott Schedules, offers of settlement, agreements, and written submissions
- Analyzing income, support, business valuation, property division, and other financial issues
- Conducting examinations for discovery
- Attending chambers applications, judicial case conferences, settlement conferences, and mediations
- Preparing witnesses and trial materials
- Appearing in court
- Assisting senior counsel with complex hearings and trials
- Assuming responsibility for your own hearings and trials as appropriate
Our associates are not limited to research and drafting. We believe strong litigators develop through direct client work, courtroom experience, and meaningful responsibility for their files.
Qualifications
Required:
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia
- Litigation experience
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to manage competing deadlines
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
Assets:
- Family law litigation experience
- Experience independently managing litigation files
- Chambers, discovery, mediation, or trial experience
- Strong numerical aptitude and comfort analyzing financial information
- Experience with business interests, income determination, valuations, or tax-related issues
Compensation and Benefits
We offer:
- Salary range: $110,000 to $170,000 annually, based on experience and performance
- Competitive compensation based on experience and productivity
- Performance-based bonus opportunities
- Extended health and dental benefits
- Meaningful courtroom and advocacy experience
- Exposure to complex and sophisticated family law matters
- A long-standing team of experienced lawyers and support staff
