Original job description

Dooley Lucenti LLP is a well-established Barrie firm with deep roots in the community and a growing litigation practice. We are seeking a litigation law clerk to support a senior litigation lawyer who has recently joined our firm. The lawyer’s caseload is expected to expand over the next year, offering an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their skills and grow with the firm.

Applications are welcome from new graduates and candidates with a few years of litigation experience. We are willing to train the right candidate, who will work closely with the lawyer to learn our processes and support an established and expanding client base. As the caseload grows over the next year, the successful candidate will be expected to take on increasing responsibility for file management, manage competing priorities, and work with greater independence as their skills develop.

Responsibilities will include the following, with training and guidance provided based on the successful candidate’s experience:

  • Preparing, drafting, revising, and serving court documents such as motion materials, pleadings, releases, orders, and Affidavit of Documents;
  • Dealing with and handling undertakings and productions;
  • Reviewing and saving electronically all incoming and outgoing correspondence from clients, opposing counsel, and other parties;
  • Providing clients with updates on file status;
  • Managing the lawyer’s calendar and schedule using a tickler system for deadlines and follow-ups to move files forward;
  • Assist with potential new client intakes including conflict searches, consultation meetings and retainers;
  • Preparing for trial, mediations and pre-trials;

The successful candidate will bring strong technical and writing skills, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines effectively. A foundational understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure is an asset, along with a willingness to develop a strong working knowledge through training and practical experience. A proactive approach to learning, asking questions, and flagging deadlines or competing priorities will be important as the lawyer’s practice grows.
