Original job description

Dragonfleye is looking to add a Mechanical Engineer to their Ocular Injector Device team. This is a highly hands on role and will work cross-functionally with Quality & Design, Program Management as well as outside vendors and suppliers.

This role is required to be onsite at the Dragonfleye office and laboratory in downtown Toronto.

ABOUT DRAGONFLEYE

Dragonfleye is a near-clinical-stage ophthalmic medical device and biotechnology company developing new treatments for multiple eye diseases through precise, minimally invasive delivery of therapeutic agents to the suprachoroidal, supraciliary, and subretinal spaces, including the macula. Our pipeline includes retinal detachment and glaucoma. Learn more at dragonfleyecorp.com. This role is the hands-on engineer who turns injector concepts into working hardware.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

This is not a desk-only design role. You'll take injector concepts from early sketches through functional and advanced prototypes, and you'll build, assemble, and test much of that hardware yourself. You'll solve problems that cross mechanical, electromechanical, and manufacturing lines, and adapt quickly as priorities shift. Your initial focus will be R&D, and you'll also support sustaining engineering programs on existing device designs. Our designs iterate fast, and we're looking for someone energized by that pace and motivated by the impact this work will have on patients.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

Mechanical design

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies for our ocular injector devices in SolidWorks, from concept sketches through detailed, manufacturable models and drawings.

Prototyping and test

  • Build, assemble, 3D print, and test physical prototypes, including small and delicate precision components, and iterate quickly on test results and design reviews. Carry designs from early functional prototypes through higher-fidelity, production-intent builds.

Electromechanical integration

  • Apply working electronics knowledge to the electromechanical elements of the injector (sensors, actuators, motors, simple circuits). Prepare and refine electromechanical prototypes for design updates, including on sustaining engineering programs.

Design for manufacturing

  • Use knowledge of injection molding, machining, and additive manufacturing to guide design choices, and take part in design reviews, risk assessments, and design-for-manufacturing decisions with the cross-functional team.

Vendors and suppliers

  • Own the relationship with outside vendors and suppliers, including sourcing, quoting, and coordinating on custom parts and processes.

Documentation

  • Document design work, test results, and prototype iterations clearly for internal records and regulatory traceability, and complete quality records (design history file entries, engineering change orders, inspection and test records) accurately and on time.

MUST-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education. Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, biomedical, or a related engineering field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • CAD. Proficient in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings); GD&T a plus.
  • Fundamentals. Strong grasp of engineering physics and precision design (force and stress analysis, kinematics, stiffness, power, constraint-based design, error budgeting and tolerance analysis, and compliant mechanisms), used to make design decisions quickly and confidently.
  • Hands-on build. Demonstrated ability to build, assemble, and troubleshoot physical prototypes with small, precise components, and to 3D print parts (FDM, resin, or both) with design-for-printing in mind, and to carry a design from early prototype through near-production builds.
  • Electronics. Working knowledge of basic electronics and controls: reading schematics, simple circuits, motors, and common sensors and actuators.
  • Manufacturing and vendors. Familiarity with machining, injection molding, or other production methods relevant to medical devices; comfortable working with vendors and completing quality documentation as part of the design process.
  • Disposition. Hands-on through the whole build, from prototyping and assembly to manufacturing support; detail-oriented while moving between competing priorities; passionate about medical device development.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Formal engineering drawings for manufacturing and procurement; experience within an ISO 13485 quality management system, including document and change control.
  • Designing products to meet medical device standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Optical components or systems; software experience (scripting, automation, embedded, or firmware) relevant to electromechanical devices.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A hands-on role shaping our injector platform from concept to production-intent prototypes, breadth across programs, a level and title matched to your experience, and participation in the company's stock option plan.
  • Work that matters. Help patients with ocular disease by advancing a novel platform designed to make ophthalmic treatments more precise and less invasive, with the potential to improve treatment, recovery, and quality of life.
  • Visibility. Work closely with leadership, where your data and contributions are seen and valued.

Dragonfleye Therapeutics is an equal-opportunity employer. Programs referenced are investigational and not approved for commercial use.
