Part-time support opportunity (classification): Regular Hourly rate: $38.50

Hours:

up to a maximum of 24 hours per week Reporting To: Associate Dean, Faculty of Social and Community Services

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Placement Liaison (PL) role is to help students actualize the application of their placement learning outcomes in the field by providing guidance, coaching and feedback. The PL is responsible for ensuring that all required placement documentation is collected and reviewed including timesheets, dockets, mid-term and final evaluations. The PL is responsible for monitoring the progress of students throughout their placements including via in person site visits when required by the program or as needed to support student success.

A critical component of this role is to proactively intervene when concerns arise throughout the placement process. The PL is expected to problem-solve with the student and the placement site and is accountable for negotiating and mediating concerns as well as ensuring that expectations are clearly communicated. To accomplish this, the PL will regularly consult with various college officials including Student Advisors / Field Placement Officers, faculty members and program coordinators. Finally, the PL is responsible for escalating concerns to the Associate Dean when needed and ensuring that Durham College (DC) and the Faculty of Social and Community Services (FSCS) policies and procedures are diligently followed.

a PL, you will:

Provide guidance, coaching and feedback to students regarding expectations to ensure that behaviours such as lack of attendance and lack of professionalism are proactively addressed and students are provided with opportunities to course correct.
Review all course requirements, including but not limited to dockets, activities, and observations.
Proactively intervene with students and placement hosts when concerns arise. This may require convening meetings, collecting documentation and/or conducting a site visit. The PL will be required to negotiate and/or mediate solutions, document next steps and monitor progress.
Conduct site visits, when necessary, to ensure that students are provided with opportunities to practice and demonstrate required learning outcomes.
Ensure strong working relationships are in place with placement hosts and to mediate concerns.
Escalate concerns to the Associate Dean, ensuring that information is clearly and concisely presented and well documented pursuant to college policies and faculty procedures.
Assist the Associate Dean in resolving concerns which may include gathering additional information, scheduling meetings or providing further intervention.
Meet with students who have been removed from placement due to performance concerns, engage students in reflection to ensure expectations are set for re-engagement with future field placements
Work collaboratively with Student Advisors / Field Placement Officers and other staff to support student placement success.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a 4-year post-secondary degree.
A current licensee with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO).
A minimum of 3 years of work experience in an education, community or legal setting providing advising, coaching and feedback.
Demonstrated conflict resolution skills gained through related employment experience or professional development.
Demonstrated ability to apply equity, diversity and inclusion as well as intersectionality when interpreting policy and responding to situations.
Highly developed interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to develop professional and collaborative relationships with hosts.
Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing as required to effectively problem-solve, negotiate and mediate concerns as well as hold parties accountable while maintaining professional, collaborative and supportive relationships.
Considered a strong asset if the incumbent has education or work experience in one or more of the following program areas:
