Our mission is to combine advanced technology with customized engineering solutions to improve performance, functionality, and productivity. We deliver complete automation solutions, from controls programming and technical support to fully integrated, turnkey industrial automation systems.

Our expertise includes custom machinery, robotics, electrical controls, controls integration, and turnkey automation systems. We partner with customers to design and implement reliable, efficient, and maintainable solutions for complex manufacturing requirements.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Designer – Automation to lead electrical design for custom industrial machinery, automation systems, equipment retrofits, and manufacturing upgrades.

In this senior technical role, you will take ownership of electrical design from initial concept and system architecture through detailed engineering, drawing release, equipment build, installation, and commissioning.

You will work closely with controls engineers, mechanical designers, project managers, and customers to develop safe, practical, and cost-effective electrical solutions. You will also provide technical guidance, review designs, and help maintain consistent engineering standards across projects.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in industrial machine design, strong knowledge of electrical controls and machine safety, and the ability to translate complex requirements into clear, build-ready engineering documentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical design and system architecture for custom machinery, industrial automation equipment, retrofits, and system upgrades.
  • Develop electrical schematics, control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, power distribution designs, and bills of materials.
  • Select and specify PLCs, HMIs, motor starters, variable frequency drives, servo drives, sensors, safety devices, circuit protection, and other electrical components.
  • Design electrical control systems with consideration for functionality, maintainability, serviceability, safety, and cost.
  • Apply relevant electrical codes, standards, and customer specifications, including applicable CSA, UL, and NFPA requirements.
  • Review electrical designs for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance before drawing release.
  • Coordinate electrical design activities with mechanical engineering, controls programming, manufacturing, and project management teams.
  • Support panel fabrication, machine assembly, equipment installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Evaluate existing equipment and develop electrical modernization, retrofit, and upgrade solutions.
  • Troubleshoot electrical design issues and recommend practical corrective actions during equipment build and commissioning.
  • Maintain drawing standards, component libraries, design documentation, and revision control.
  • Provide technical leadership, review work completed by other team members, and mentor junior electrical designers where appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, standardization, reliability, and project execution.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Seven or more years of electrical design experience in industrial automation, custom machinery, machine building, or a related industrial environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or a comparable electrical design platform.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial control panels, electrical schematics, power distribution, motor controls, circuit protection, and industrial wiring practices.
  • Experience selecting and specifying electrical components for automated machinery and integrated control systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, machine safety requirements, and relevant Canadian and US standards.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, robotics, servo systems, variable frequency drives, and industrial communication networks.
  • Experience supporting equipment builds, design reviews, installation, commissioning, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage design priorities, resolve technical issues, and deliver accurate documentation within project schedules.
  • Strong technical communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Additional assets:

  • Experience designing electrical systems for custom machinery, automotive manufacturing, robotic cells, or assembly automation.
  • Experience with safety relays, safety PLCs, guarding systems, and machine risk-reduction measures.
  • Experience with electrical retrofits, legacy equipment upgrades, and modernization projects.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A, NFPA 79, CSA C22.1, and other applicable electrical or machinery standards.
  • Experience establishing design standards, maintaining component libraries, and improving engineering workflows.
  • Experience mentoring designers or providing technical leadership within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's licence and passport.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer facilities in Canada and the United States as project requirements dictate.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Commitment to safe engineering practices and compliance with applicable electrical and workplace safety requirements.
What We Offer
  • Competitive annual salary of $80,000–$115,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive employee benefits.
  • Technical ownership of diverse automation projects, from concept and design through equipment build and commissioning.
  • Opportunities to lead electrical design for custom machinery, robotics, retrofits, and advanced industrial automation systems.
  • A collaborative engineering environment with opportunities to influence design standards and technical processes.
