Original job description
Join DWF’s Canadian Cyber, Privacy and Data Protection Group as a mid- to senior-level Associate. You will take carriage of complex cyber and privacy breaches and manage them independently with minimal supervision. You must bring the experience, confidence, judgment and maturity to lead the response from first notice through resolution. You will also handle litigation, particularly funds transfer fraud recovery and related commercial disputes. Breach response is demanding, but we do not compromise our supportive, respectful and collaborative culture. We expect senior team members to protect and strengthen that culture in every interaction.
Work from our Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal or Calgary office. You must have at least five years of practice, including at least three years of progressive cyber breach response experience. This is not an entry-level breach response role. You must be ready to take immediate carriage of active matters and make sound decisions with minimal supervision. We provide ongoing training and mentorship, and our team works closely to maintain a consistent approach to recurring breach issues. Please apply only if you already have the experience and judgment to lead complex breaches independently. You must also have strong commercial litigation experience. You do not need an existing client base. We offer performance-based remuneration and flexible, innovative work arrangements where appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Take carriage of complex ransomware, business email compromise and other cyber and privacy events from first notice through resolution
- Lead the response with minimal supervision, set strategy, make timely decisions, keep all workstreams moving, and ensure compliance with client guidelines and service-level agreements
- Direct forensic, notification, communications and recovery workstreams and advise on legal and regulatory obligations
- Work with the team to apply a consistent approach to recurring legal, regulatory and strategic breach issues
- Prepare clients for breaches through incident response plans, tabletop exercises, policies and procedures
- Handle funds transfer fraud recovery actions and other cyber-related commercial litigation, including motions, examinations for discovery, mediations and settlement negotiations
- Give clear, practical and timely advice to corporate and public sector clients, insurers, managing general agents, brokers and other incident response stakeholders
- Manage your practice and client relationships
- Develop business and build your professional profile
- Meet billable and non-billable targets
- Supervise, mentor and support junior lawyers while modelling and reinforcing DWF’s respectful, collaborative firm culture
What will help you succeed in this role?
- Bring the experience, confidence, judgment and professional maturity to take carriage of a complex, high-stakes breach, make difficult decisions and advise senior stakeholders with minimal supervision.
- Be entitled to practise law in Canada and in good standing with the applicable provincial law society
- Have at least five years of legal practice, including at least three years of progressive cyber breach response experience
- Demonstrate a record of independently leading complex cyber incidents and managing competing workstreams with minimal supervision
- Have strong commercial litigation experience; funds transfer fraud recovery experience is an asset
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills, sound self-awareness and empathy for colleagues working in a high-pressure environment
This may narrow the pool down a little too much? Maybe 1-2 years of dedicated cyber breach response practice?
