Original job description

Senior Structural Engineer

Position: permanent, full-time (40 hours a week), based out of the office at 1801 Hollis, Halifax, NS

About EastPoint

EastPoint is a multi-discipline architectural and engineering firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Owned by its management and senior employees, EastPoint’s leadership has worked together as a team for more than 20 years. It is the successor firm of Whitman Benn and Associates, which originated in 1933. We service an array of industrial, government, institutional, and commercial clients. Through decades of experience, we have accumulated a deep understanding of design, construction, accessibility, costs, regulatory issues, environmental, and technical solutions to support our clients.

We believe we can work on the most challenging and rewarding of projects, anywhere, with the right people. This entrepreneurial spirit has allowed EastPoint to enter new markets and deliver more than 10,000 projects. We’ve put our fingerprint on multidisciplinary projects from facility upgrades to new wharf construction, from new public infrastructure to transformative waterfront infrastructure. We work on large and small projects to shape places, not only in Nova Scotia, but across Canada and beyond. We have completed a lot of work on the Halifax Waterfront with many more ongoing just steps away from the office.

Yet of all the things we’ve built, we’re most proud of our company culture. We have organically grown our company since its founding to more than 200 architects, engineers, designers, and professionals today.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the VP, Structural Engineering, you will be an integral part of the engineering team, leading, developing and implementing technical solutions in both the office and field. You will participate in all project design phases, from feasibility assessment and detailed design, through tendering, construction, and commissioning. By joining the EastPoint team you will be part of a fun, energetic and collaborative organization that focuses on the quality of your work and not the hours you log. This is an opportunity to work on exciting and creative projects while mentoring a talented and dedicated team of professionals. In return for the skillset and expertise you bring you will be given a competitive compensation and benefits package.

EastPoint is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer with 10+ years’ of experience in the structural engineering industry. At EastPoint, we value growth and mentorship. Senior engineers should enjoy being paired with junior engineers and mentoring through the process of supporting team members currently pursuing a P.Eng. designation. We encourage continuous learning and provide clear pathways for career advancement.

Primary Accountabilities

We count on your expertise to:

Lead conceptual and detailed structural design for commercial and industrial buildings, institutional facilities, wharves, piers, bridges, and other infrastructure projects.
Manage the structural scope through feasibility assessment, design, tendering, construction and commissioning, including schedules, deliverables, and coordination with other disciplines.
Perform and check structural analyses and complex calculations, review drawings, specifications, reports, and change orders for technical quality and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Interpret Geotechnical Reports, bathymetric and topographical studies to develop foundation and structural design solutions.
Work directly with clients, architects, engineers, BIM technicians, contractors, and subconsultants to define requirements and resolve design and construction issues.
Provide technical guidance, quality reviews, and mentorship to engineers, engineers in training, and designers.

Skills / Training Requirements

This opportunity might be the right fit if you enjoy an open and collaborative office environment with a team that likes to have fun together, in and out of the office. Your ideas will be valued, and your technical expertise will have the opportunity to grow and develop.

Bachelor’s or degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited University required. A master’s degree is considered an asset.
10+ years’ of relevant structural engineering experience in the design and construction of buildings and infrastructure.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) in Nova Scotia, or the eligibility to obtain registration.
Experience with ETABS or similar structural analysis software.
Strong knowledge of structural design guidelines and codes including Bridge Code (CSA S6-19), Concrete Code (CSA A23.3), Steel Code (CSA S16) and Timber Code (CSA O86).
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a high level of accuracy in calculations and design.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Able to travel to various locations across Canada, maximum 5 days per 60-90 days.
