Build the future of safe commerce
Millions of people buy and sell on eBay every day, making it one of the largest and most diverse marketplaces worldwide. A group of analysts, scientists, and strategists work behind the scenes to keep the platform safe, fair, and dependable. We are searching for an outstanding Data Scientist to join eBay’s Trust & Risk Analytics team in Toronto and help define marketplace safety at scale.
The opportunity
This is not a role for someone who wants to run analyses in isolation. As a Data Scientist in Trust & Risk, you will operate as a strategic analytics partner to senior leaders across Trust, Risk, Product, Engineering, Policy, and Shipping. You will build how eBay identifies, measures, and reduces transaction risk - and your work will directly influence platform decisions affecting hundreds of millions of users globally.
You will lead the analytical approach for several complex workstreams, such as seller risk, buyer risk, account risk, eBay Money Back Guarantee, and shipping loss. You will also develop measurement and decision frameworks that promote accountability and influence business outcomes throughout the organization.
What you'll do
- Build Trust & Risk Strategy: Define and drive analytical strategy across Trust & Risk domains, translating organizational objectives into measurable priorities
- Define Enterprise Measurement: Build enterprise-scale benchmarks and quantitative frameworks for transaction risk, decision quality, false positives, residual exposure, and return on investment
- Lead Across Workstreams: Lead simultaneous high-impact analytical workstreams, connecting insights across risk vectors and organizational boundaries
- Influence Cross-Functional Decisions: Guide senior leaders across Trust, Product, Finance, Engineering, and Policy with clear, compelling, evidence-based recommendations
- Identify & Prioritize Opportunities: Identify and prioritize the highest-value opportunities across customer experience, marketplace risk, and transaction loss
- Raise the Analytical Bar: Mentor and develop other data scientists, raising the quality of analytical thinking and execution across the team
What we're looking for
- BA/BS with 8+ years, or Masters/PhD with 6+ years of experience in Data Science, Analytics, Quantitative Research, or a related field
- Demonstrated ability to move from ambiguous business problems to structured analytical strategies with measurable organizational impact
- Strong technical foundation: proficiency in Python or R, SQL, and applied quantitative/statistical methods
- Proven experience leading multiple complex analytical workstreams simultaneously and driving sustained outcomes
- Outstanding executive communication skills - you make the complex simple and the insightful actionable
- Track record of influencing cross-functional decisions at senior levels without relying on direct authority
Preferred experience
- Prior experience in marketplace trust, fraud, transaction risk, or e-commerce
- Background in developing enterprise measurement frameworks for loss, decision quality, or risk exposure
- Experience in a leading technology or e-commerce company
- Familiarity with machine learning, NLP, or LLM/GenAI applications
