Electronics Technician - Apprentice

Edmonton Catholic Schools is seeking a Journeyman or Apprentice Electronics Technician to join the Facility Services Team!

The main focus of the job is to manage requests from Division sites pertaining to electronic maintenance or modernization projects from start to completion. The job coordinates Division electronics systems projects, including planning, diagramming, scheduling, conducting on-site inspection, facilitating and coordinating with project participants. The job is also responsible for documenting electronic systems, projects and assisting with the installation and maintenance of electronic systems as required.

Work involves procedures of a technical nature and uses hand tools and various sophisticated test equipment. The incumbent works with minimal supervision or as part of various teams in completing projects and activities.

Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by electronic, construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division’s goals and objectives.

There is considerable discretion exercised by the incumbent in the performance of regular duties.

Job Responsibilities

Project management

Participate as a member of a project planning and design team, utilize independent judgement and input from team members
Determine where repairs are required and the most efficient method to complete the work
Manage inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping, and categorizing supplies, materials and equipment related to each project assigned
Assist in development of preventive maintenance program and assess existing electronic system for modernization
Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Maintenance and repairs

Diagnose and repair various electronic equipment and systems, such as classroom audio and video systems, intrusion alarm systems, surveillance systems, public address systems, correctable clock systems, large venue AV systems with digital signal processing and touch panel controls, access control systems, digital signage systems
Complete preventive maintenance tasks at scheduled intervals
Identify problems through on-site inspections and report to supervisor – may determine alternatives for corrective action and present recommendations to supervisor for resolution.
Assist in worksite cleanup
Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards

New installations

Plan, install, configure electronic system equipment, such as classroom audio and video systems, intrusion alarm systems, surveillance systems, public address systems, correctable clock systems, large venue AV systems with digital signal processing and touch panel controls, access control systems, digital signage systems.
Install required cabling and conduit to support system installation

Building security

Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements

Knowledge And Experience

High School diploma
Current valid Journeyman Electronics Technician or Journeyman Communication Technician trades certificate or a graduate in Electronics from a recognized technical institute. Apprentices will be considered. Apprentices shall receive the appropriate percentage of the journeyman rates of pay as specified in the regulations pursuant to the Apprenticeship and Industry Trade Act.
Several years related experience with proven troubleshooting techniques
Knowledge of structured cabling techniques and electronic systems installation and repairs acquired through trades related training and experience
General understanding of basic construction and maintenance techniques
Knowledge of digital signal processor programming
Knowledge of the safe use of power and manual tools and equipment
Knowledge of the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation
Knowledge of regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business, and operations
Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet is required
Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset

Skills And Abilities

Ability to prepare technical reports related to the equipment serviced
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to identify the level of repair required and make decisions as to the most efficient means of repair
Ability to work with minimal service information.
Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, co-workers and the general public
Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
Ability to work without supervision
Ability to work with minimal service information.
Physically able to complete job duties using appropriate tools and techniques (constantly lifting up to 30Kg/66lbs)
Ability to schedule, plan task priorities and manage several projects with conflicting demands
Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills is mandatory
Class 5 driver’s license and the ability to travel independently to various sites within Edmonton
Ability to provide a clean driver’s abstract upon hire and as requested
Possession of a complete set of recognized trade related basic hand tools
