Job Description
AltaGas - Director, Government Relations
AltaGas is looking for an experienced, business driven leader to help shape and advance the Government Relations priorities of our Midstream business. In this role, you'll build trusted relationships with government officials, policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions. You'll bring strong political and policy insight, sound judgement, and demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships across multiple jurisdictions. We're looking for someone who is commercially minded and operates confidently across complex political, regulatory, and business environments. You'll bring together different perspectives, advise senior leaders, and help advance priorities critical to the continued growth of our Midstream and export development business
What You'll Do
- Help strengthen the Government Relations function and shape multi-year strategies that support our Midstream business, export development ambitions, and long-term value creation
- Develop a deep understanding of our Midstream business, commercial priorities, and value proposition, and bring that perspective into our government and external engagement
- Partner with the Export Development & External Affairs leadership team and Midstream Business Development to help advance AltaGas' long-term export development vision
- Build and sustain trusted, direct relationships with government officials, policymakers, regulators, agencies, industry associations and other key stakeholders across Canada and the U.S.
- Anticipate geopolitical, political, regulatory, and energy-market developments and translate them into strategic direction, business opportunities, and potential risks
- Develop and advance advocacy strategies that support operations, major projects, export growth, market access, and regulatory certainty
- Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on government, policy and regulatory matters, bringing a commercial and enterprise perspective to complex issues and strategic decisions
- Represent AltaGas in government, regulatory, industry and stakeholder forums, consultations, and negotiations
- Influence and align leaders across Commercial, Business Development, Operations, Legal, Communications, Corporate Development, and Indigenous Relations to advance shared enterprise priorities
- Translate complex policy, regulatory and business issues into clear, compelling insights for executive and Board audiences
- 10+ years of progressive experience in Government Relations, public policy, or advocacy, preferably within Midstream, energy exports, utilities, or a related energy environment
- Demonstrated experience navigating multiple jurisdictions, with an understanding of federal, provincial, and state political and regulatory environments
- A strong track record of building trusted, influential relationships with senior government officials, policymakers, regulators, agencies, and industry stakeholders
- Experience developing and executing advocacy strategies that support complex business, infrastructure, regulatory or market-access priorities
- Strong commercial acumen and curiosity, with the ability to quickly understand what drives the business, where value is created and how government and policy can influence business outcomes
- The ability to connect geopolitical, policy, and regulatory developments with export development, business strategy, opportunity, and risk
- An ownership mindset and the credibility and confidence to lead important relationships and priorities directly.
- Sound judgement and the ability to make thoughtful trade-offs while navigating complexity, ambiguity, and competing interests
- The ability to influence and build alignment across functions, leadership levels, and geographies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex issues for senior executive and Board audiences
- A bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, business, or a related discipline is preferred
- Ability to travel as required
