Ready to take the next step in your career? Join Egis and be part of our exciting growth across Canada. As a member of our global team of 23,500+ engineers, architects, scientists and consultants, you'll help deliver some of the country's most impactful infrastructure, transportation, buildings and energy projects while building a career with global opportunities and local impact.

Job Description

We are seeking an Intermediate/Senior Hydrogeologist to support municipal infrastructure, transportation, land development, energy, mining, and other development projects throughout Alberta and Western Canada.

The ideal candidate could be based in our Calgary or Edmonton office.

This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced hydrogeologist who can balance fieldwork with data interpretation, technical assessment and reporting, regulatory support, and collaboration with engineering and multidisciplinary project teams. The successful candidate will independently deliver hydrogeological assignments, mentor developing staff, and support project managers with technical scoping, costing, proposals, and project delivery.

The position will focus on groundwater assessment, including the collection, interpretation, and reporting of hydrogeological information to support project planning and design, impact assessment, permitting, and regulatory approvals.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and participate in hydrogeological field programs, including:
    • Groundwater monitoring and sampling.
    • Monitoring well installation and development.
    • Water-level monitoring and hydraulic testing.
    • Aquifer and pumping tests.
    • Groundwater quality investigations.
    • Hydrogeological site characterization.
  • Develop appropriately scoped hydrogeological investigation and monitoring programs based on project needs, existing information, groundwater conditions, potential environmental effects, and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze and interpret hydrogeological information to characterize:
    • Groundwater levels, gradients, and flow.
    • Aquifer conditions and hydraulic properties.
    • Groundwater quality.
    • Recharge and discharge relationships.
    • Groundwater-surface water interactions and groundwater-dependent environmental features.
  • Develop and refine conceptual hydrogeological models to support project design, effects assessment, mitigation, monitoring, and identification of additional investigation requirements.
  • Assess potential project effects on groundwater quantity, quality and groundwater-dependent receptors and develop appropriate mitigation and monitoring recommendations.
  • Support hydrogeological components of municipal, provincial, and federal impact assessment, permitting, and approval processes, including applicable requirements under Alberta's Water Act and Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA).
  • Provide hydrogeological interpretation and recommendations to engineering and design teams to support project planning, evaluation of alternatives, design development, construction planning, and decision-making.
  • Independently deliver smaller and moderately complex assignments, including:
    • Developing work plans and field programs.
    • Estimating level of effort and project costs.
    • Coordinating drilling, subcontractors, and field activities.
    • Interpreting data and preparing technical deliverables.
  • Contribute technical scopes and cost estimates to proposals and multidisciplinary projects.
  • Provide field leadership, training, and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, regulators, and multidisciplinary project teams regarding groundwater conditions, assessment findings, regulatory requirements, and project considerations.
  • Provide construction-phase hydrogeological monitoring and technical support, as required.

Why Join Us

You will take on a key technical role within our growing Alberta environmental practice, combining hands-on hydrogeological fieldwork with increasing responsibility for technical interpretation, reporting, design-team support, client interaction, and impact assessment.

This position offers an experienced intermediate or emerging senior hydrogeologist the opportunity to continue developing while mentoring junior staff and progressing toward increased technical and professional responsibility for hydrogeological work across Alberta and Western Canada.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

  • B.Sc., M.Sc., or engineering degree in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, environmental engineering, earth sciences, or another discipline supporting professional practice in hydrogeology.
  • Registration as a Professional Geoscientist (P. Geo.) with APEGA, or eligibility for registration. A P.Eng. designation may also be appropriate where the candidate's education, experience, demonstrated competency, and professional scope of practice encompass hydrogeology.
  • Approximately 7+ years of relevant consulting experience, with consideration given to candidates with somewhat less experience who demonstrate strong technical capability and the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Hydrogeological field programs.
    • Groundwater monitoring and sampling.
    • Monitoring well installation and development.
    • Hydraulic testing and interpretation.
    • Groundwater flow and quality interpretation.
    • Hydrogeological site characterization and conceptual model development.
    • Technical reporting and development of practical recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to design and lead field programs while remaining actively involved in fieldwork.
  • Ability to interpret hydrogeological conditions and translate findings into practical recommendations for impact assessment, permitting, project planning, and design.
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta regulatory framework relevant to groundwater, including applicable Water Act and EPEA requirements.
  • Ability to independently scope and deliver smaller technical assignments, including costing, subcontractor coordination, data interpretation, and preparation of technical deliverables.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise, and defensible technical documentation and communicate effectively with clients, regulators, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineering and design teams and communicate the implications of hydrogeological conditions for project design and decision-making.
  • Ability and interest in training and mentoring junior staff.
  • Willingness to travel and undertake fieldwork throughout Alberta and, occasionally, elsewhere in Western Canada.

Additional Experience Considered an Asset

Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial but is not required:

  • Hydrogeological impact assessment for municipal, provincial, or federally reviewed projects.
  • Groundwater diversion assessments and Water Act authorization processes.
  • Groundwater-surface water interaction assessments and supply investigations.
  • Working collaboratively with surface-water hydrologists, water resources engineers, aquatic ecologists, and other specialists to evaluate interactions between groundwater and surface-water systems.
  • Dewatering assessments and construction groundwater management.
  • Groundwater-dependent ecosystems, wetlands, springs, or other groundwater-sensitive features.
  • Hydrogeochemistry and groundwater-quality assessment.
  • Contaminant hydrogeology.
  • Numerical or analytical groundwater modelling.
  • Experience acting as, or progressing toward the competency required to act as, an appropriately qualified professional for applicable hydrogeological assessments. Municipal infrastructure, transportation, land development, mining, or energy project experience.
