Overview
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Clinical Supervisor provides clinical leadership, supervision, guidance and coaching to the addictions counselling team while supporting the effective delivery of clinical programming and advancing continuous quality improvement within the program.
The program provides assessment, evaluation, and treatment services for clients experiencing substance use and process addictions, as well as concurrent mental health challenges. Care is delivered using a trauma-informed and person-centred approach.
The Clinical Supervisor provides direct leadership and supervision to addictions counsellors and oversees day-to-day clinical programming. The role works closely with the Executive Director and other members of the interdisciplinary leadership team to ensure clinical services are delivered consistently, safely, and in alignment with organizational standards and evidence-based practice.
As a working clinical leader, the Clinical Supervisor maintains an active role in direct client care and program delivery. This may include facilitating groups, delivering lectures and psychoeducational programming, conducting individual counselling sessions, and maintaining a caseload of clients as required based on program and operational needs.
The Clinical Supervisor works closely with the Executive Director, nursing, operations manager, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to promote coordinated, integrated, and high-quality client care. Together, leadership ensures clinical standards are upheld, supports team performance, and keeps programming responsive to client needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate program content and make recommendations to the Executive Director for revisions and improvements, as required, using evidence-based practices.
- Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, and day-to-day direction to the addictions counselling team. Conducts annual goal setting, ongoing feedback and performance review processes while fostering a high-performance and engaged team.
- Ensures effective and thorough onboarding and orientation of new staff, including clinical content of sessions, client expectations, administrative processes, maintenance of excellent referent communication, outcome measures and discharge planning/summaries.
- In addition, ensures clinicians understand and live the organization’s mission, purpose and values while employing evidence-based therapy through a trauma-informed lens.
- Participates and provides input into the recruitment and selection process for clinicians
- Participates in the development and implementation of new processes or initiatives as directed and completes projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
- Is attentive to and intervenes in any client safety issues and investigates client concerns and complaints as assigned.
- Oversees vacation requests and adequate coverage of programming/assignments, ensuring the broader clinical program also has adequate coverage.
- Provides clinical consultation and guidance to counsellors regarding complex client presentations, treatment planning, boundaries, risk management, discharge planning, and other clinical matters.
- Monitors clinical documentation, treatment planning, discharge summaries, and other clinical records to support quality, consistency, and timely completion.
- Leads or participates in clinical team meetings, case conferences, interdisciplinary meetings, and other program meetings as required
- Maintains direct involvement in clinical programming, including facilitating groups, lectures, psychoeducational sessions, and individual counselling.
- Maintains or assumes a client caseload when required to support program needs, coverage, client care, or operational demands.
- Participates in a weekly rotating on-call schedule, providing after-hours clinical consultation, guidance, and support to the team as required.
In addition to the above, the Clinical Supervisor maintains clinical responsibilities and may provide direct client care based on program needs, including the following:
- Help the client identify areas of change and the impact substance use disorder and concurrent mental health diagnoses have had on their lives.
- Develop therapeutic rapport and continue to help the client identify areas of change.
- Uses a variety of counselling techniques to help the client make appropriate life changes and learn new skills to enhance their Recovery Capital moving forward.
- Facilitates therapeutic groups, individual counselling sessions, psychoeducational workshops, and lectures. Provides opportunities for patients to practice new skills in conflict resolution and emotional regulation using evidence-based techniques such as DBT, CPT, and CBT strategies.
- Provides case coordination and communicates effectively across the interdisciplinary team. Delivers educational sessions to clients, families, staff, public audiences, and external groups as required. Collaborates in the development, implementation and follow-up of the client care plan and discharge plan and summaries
- Completes detailed documentation and charting appropriately. Prepares reports or correspondence in a timely manner
- Participates in weekly meetings and consultation meetings of teams – makes recommendations based on the client's progress
- Supports a framework of accountability and personal responsibility for clients throughout their recovery.Liaises with parole and probation officers, verbally, electronically and/or in writing on a weekly basis and documents the same
- Updates families on an as-needed basis, arrange for family consultation when needed
- Engages in personal professional development, maintains appropriate professional associations, and provides current documentation to the Human Resources Department
- Provides supervision for students in placement at EHN
- Undertakes Quality Assurance activities as assigned, including completion of outcome measures
- Engages in continued training provided by EHN and other educational opportunities and benefits of interest to the clinician.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years’ experience in leadership, including demonstrated knowledge of effective people leadership, supervision, coaching, and performance management practices.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in social work, psychology, counselling, addictions, behavioural health, or a related discipline; an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of three to five years of mental health and addictions-related experience; membership in good standing with a mental health or addictions professional body.
- Demonstrated experience providing individual and group counselling and delivering psychoeducational programming.
- Experience providing clinical supervision, consultation, mentorship, or leadership to counselling professionals is preferred.
- Membership in good standing, or membership eligibility, with an applicable mental health, counselling, social work, or addictions professional or regulatory body.
- Strong knowledge of substance use disorders, concurrent mental health conditions, trauma-informed care, treatment planning, group facilitation, and evidence-based clinical approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to balance clinical leadership responsibilities with direct client care and program delivery.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, documentation, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is considered an asset.
