Quality Manager - Job Description (EMCC)

Position summary

The Quality Manager owns EMCC's quality system end to end: keeping our ISO 9001:2015 registration and CSA N299 nuclear quality program audit-ready, and making sure every coil and every reel of magnet wire that leaves Barrie meets specification the first time. This is a hands-on leadership role on the shop floor, in the lab and in front of customers and auditors. You will use Lean and structured problem-solving to cut defects, scrap and rework while building a culture where quality is everyone's job.

About EMCC

Electric Motor Coil Company (EMCC Ltd.) is an ISO 9001:2015 manufacturer based in Barrie, Ontario. We make stator coils, traction coils, armature coils, field coils, slip rings and magnet wire for motor and transformer OEMs and repair shops around the world.

Our products keep critical equipment running in mining, rail, power generation, oil and gas, marine, and pulp and paper. We run the business on EOS (the Entrepreneurial Operating System) and are building Lean and 6S discipline into daily operations, so this seat has a clear scorecard, clear accountabilities and real authority to improve how we work.

Key responsibilities

Quality management system (ISO 9001 and CSA N299)

Own, maintain and continually improve the QMS so EMCC keeps its ISO 9001:2015 registration and CSA N299 nuclear quality program compliance.
Serve as Management Representative and primary contact for registrars, customer auditors and nuclear-sector clients.
Plan and lead the internal audit program; host surveillance, recertification and customer audits; drive findings to verified closure.
Control the quality manual, procedures, work instructions, forms and records, including N299 requirements for traceability, records retention and graded quality levels.
Prepare and lead management reviews with objective data on quality objectives, audit results, customer feedback and process performance.
Maintain calibration and measuring-equipment control, training records and qualification of special processes and personnel.

Quality assurance and control: coil manufacturing

Set inspection and test plans for stator, traction and armature coils, field coils and slip rings, from incoming material to final release.
Oversee electrical and dimensional testing and qualification, such as surge comparison, HiPot, insulation resistance, turn-to-turn, voltage endurance, and resistance checks, and ensure results are recorded and traceable.
Approve first-article inspections and production release; hold authority to stop shipment of nonconforming products.
Work with Engineering and Production on process control for looping, forming, taping, resin and curing.

Quality assurance and control: magnet wire production

Monitor in-process and final testing for magnet wire, such as conductor dimensions, insulation build, dielectric breakdown, elongation, adhesion and flexibility, and thermal class, against applicable NEMA, IEC and customer specifications.
Monitor extruding, taping, wrapping and spooling lines with statistical process control and capability studies (Cp/Cpk).
Ensure lot traceability from raw material and insulation materials through finished reels.

Nonconformance, corrective action and supplier quality

Run the nonconforming material, MRB and CAPA processes; lead root-cause analysis using 8D, 5 Whys, fishbone and FMEA.
Manage customer complaints and returns: respond quickly, contain, investigate and report back.
Qualify, audit and monitor suppliers, including N299 flow-down of quality requirements and commercial-grade dedication where applicable.

Continuous improvement and leadership

Lead Lean and 6S initiatives that cut scrap, rework and cost of poor quality, and embed error-proofing (poka-yoke) and standard work.
Own quality measurables on the EMCC scorecard and deliver quarterly Most Important Things (MITs) in line with our EOS rhythm.
Hire, coach and develop the quality team; train production staff on quality standards, inspection methods and problem-solving.
Champion a culture of first-time quality and safety across all shifts.

Required qualifications

7+ years of quality experience in a manufacturing environment, including at least 3 years leading a quality function or team.
Hands-on experience maintaining an ISO 9001:2015 QMS, including leading internal audits and hosting third-party registrar audits.
Working knowledge of CSA N299 (or a comparable nuclear or regulated-industry standard such as CSA Z299, ASME NQA-1, AS9100 or IATF 16949), or the demonstrated ability to learn and apply it quickly.
Proven, practical knowledge of Lean manufacturing: value stream mapping, 5S/6S, standard work, kaizen, error-proofing and visual management.
Proficiency in core quality methods: SPC, measurement system analysis (Gage R&R), PFMEA, control plans, 8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa and Pareto analysis.
Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications and industry standards, and to translate them into inspection and test requirements.
Strong data skills in Excel or statistical software (such as Minitab) and comfort working in an ERP or QMS software environment.
Clear written and verbal communication with operators, executives, customers and auditors alike.
Eligible to work in Canada.

Preferred qualifications

Education: A bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Materials or Industrial Engineering, or a diploma in Engineering Technology or Quality Assurance. Equivalent experience will be considered.

Certifications (one or more is an asset):

ASQ Certified Quality Manager/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) or Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt
ISO 9001 Lead Auditor (Exemplar Global or IRCA/CQI certified)
ASQ Certified Quality Auditor (CQA)
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) in Ontario

Industry experience that sets candidates apart:

Electric motor, generator, transformer or coil manufacturing, or motor repair and rewind
Wire manufacturing, extrusion or taping processes
Supplying the nuclear, rail, mining or power generation sectors
Working in a company that runs with an EOS or a similar operating system

Working conditions

This role splits time between the office and the production floor, which involves noise, heat from curing ovens and extruding and taping lines, and standing or walking for extended periods. Required PPE includes safety footwear, glasses and hearing protection. Occasional travel to suppliers and customers, and occasional flexibility to support multiple shifts, may be needed.
