Senior Data Engineer

emergiTEL is hiring a Sr. Data Engineer - Schematic and Reporting Focus. This role is available as contract or perm both.

Location: Montreal, QC or Toronto, ON

Pay: $80 - $90/hour

Role Description: Design and deliver the semantic layer and Power BI reporting capability for governed data platform engagements at regulated financial institutions. Own the semantic model over the analytical tier, configure Power BI connectivity and workspaces, deliver the agreed set of reports business users depend on, and contribute engineering capacity to client-owned data engineering and ETL work alongside client teams. Author and execute the test cases that prove your work.

Who You Are

• Experienced designing and delivering semantic layers over analytical platforms such as Athena, BigQuery, Snowflake, or comparable technologies where downstream users depend on the layer in production.
• Hands-on Power BI expert with experience in DAX, connectivity to cloud analytical stores, workspace configuration, and Row Level Security (RLS) design patterns.
• Strong understanding of dimensional modeling and the ability to apply practical design decisions regarding normalization, denormalization, and semantic model usability.
• Comfortable working within the AWS data ecosystem, including S3, Athena, Iceberg or similar table formats, and Aurora PostgreSQL.
• Able to troubleshoot performance issues by tracing queries through the full data stack.
• Committed to quality engineering through proactive testing, including unit testing, integration testing, and data quality validation.
• Experienced contributing to ETL and data engineering initiatives in collaborative co-development environments while cleanly transitioning ownership back to client teams.

Additional Notes:

• Building a lineage framework rather than using Purview lineage features.
• Capturing lineage from ETL code (Glue, PySpark, SQL transformations).
• Storing lineage metadata in a graph database (Neo4j, Neptune, etc.).
• Automated lineage refresh integrated into CI/CD deployments.
• Developing lineage visualization/exploration capabilities.
• Agentic/LLM-based lineage generation.
• Explicit ownership of lineage architecture and framework design.
