This role serves as a critical link between Research & Development and Operations by applying engineering principles to improve product quality, process capability, efficiency, scalability, and manufacturing readiness. The Process Engineer develops and validates process settings required to achieve Key Process Attributes (KPAs), identifies scale-up risks, and implements mitigation strategies before products move into full-scale production. The role also supports pilot facility operations while ensuring compliance with safety, food safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements across a global network of R&D and ATI facilities.

What you’ll be doing.

  • Design, plan, execute, and evaluate pilot plant and manufacturing trials for new products, technologies, and process improvements.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate process parameters to improve yield, quality, throughput, consistency, and operational efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce process variability, material waste, energy consumption, and operating costs.
  • Support product scale-up and commercialization activities by collaborating with Product Development, Scientific, and Manufacturing teams.
  • Assess manufacturing readiness and technical feasibility of new products and technologies prior to commercialization.
  • Utilize AI and digital technologies to improve process understanding, plant correlation, and operational performance.
  • Lead and coordinate pilot plant operations while ensuring project objectives, timelines, and quality requirements are achieved.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and communicate trial data, translating technical findings into actionable business recommendations.
  • Develop process specifications, operating procedures, and technical documentation to support successful technology transfer and knowledge sharing.
  • Partner with Operations, Quality, Food Safety, Engineering, Supply Chain, and cross-functional teams to support innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support equipment commissioning, process validation, manufacturing trials, and installation activities.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, quality, workplace safety, environmental, HACCP, and regulatory requirements while promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

What you’ll need to be successful.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is considered an asset.
  • Two or more years of experience in food manufacturing, product development, process engineering, manufacturing operations, or a related environment.
  • Experience supporting R&D activities, pilot plant operations, commercialization projects, and manufacturing scale-up initiatives preferred.
  • Experience leading process improvement projects and conducting pilot or manufacturing trials.
  • Strong understanding of food manufacturing processes, industrial equipment, and processing technologies.
  • Knowledge of process control principles, industrial instrumentation, and measurement systems.
  • Experience using statistical analysis tools, root cause analysis methodologies, and data-driven problem-solving techniques.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and data analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with Continuous Improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective project management, organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate across multiple functions and geographies.
  • Results-oriented mindset with strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and passion for continuous improvement.
  • Interest in AI-enabled technologies and digital tools that support innovation and process optimization.
