Position Description

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in managing regional accounting activities and supporting financial performance across the business. Reporting to the Controller, this position oversees monthly financial reporting, reconciliations, analysis, budgeting support, and financial controls while partnering closely with operational and divisional leadership.

The Senior Accountant will also provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and support to one Accountant, ensuring accounting activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and within established deadlines.

This role requires a strong combination of technical accounting knowledge, analytical ability, leadership skills, and a hands-on approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Regional Accounting & Financial Management: Manage and oversee accounting activities for assigned regions, ensuring accurate and timely financial records, month-end close, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
Supervision & Team Leadership: Supervise one Accountant / Analyst by providing day-to-day direction, coaching, workload coordination, and support to ensure accounting activities and deadlines are completed accurately and efficiently.
Financial Reporting: Prepare and submit monthly financial statements, including detailed analysis and commentary, for divisional leaders and the Corporate Accounting Department along with compiling the consolidated financial results of the Western Canadian Operation of Emterra
Variance Analysis: Analyze income and expense variances, identify trends and key drivers, and provide clear explanations and recommendations to support financial decision-making.
Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead annual budget preparation, consolidation, business planning, trend analysis, and rolling forecasts in partnership with divisional and operational leaders.
Financial Business Partnering: Work closely with divisional and operational leaders to provide financial insights, identify opportunities to improve profitability and performance, and support informed business decisions.
Review & Quality Control: Review accounting work, reconciliations, journal entries, supporting schedules, and other financial information prepared by the Accountant to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Month-End & Reconciliations: Support month-end close and maintain accurate balance sheet and inter-company account reconciliations.
Tax & Government Reporting: Prepare and submit HST and Statistics Canada reports, along with other required financial and regulatory reporting.
Systems & Reporting: Maintain accurate accounting records within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and support improvements to financial reporting and processes.
KPIs & Performance Reporting: Develop and maintain financial reports, KPIs, benchmarking, and other analysis to support operational and financial performance.
Audit & Compliance: Assist the Controller with annual audit preparation and ensure appropriate financial controls and accounting procedures are maintained.
Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve data accuracy, reduce manual work, and enhance reporting efficiency.
Special Projects: Participate in financial analysis, special projects, process improvement initiatives, and other duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications

CPA designation along with a Bachelors degree in Finance and Accounting
Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Previous experience supervising, mentoring, or providing day-to-day guidance to accounting staff is preferred.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, financial modelling, and data analysis.
Strong experience with accounting software applications; experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is preferred.
Experience with Microsoft Power BI is considered an asset.
Strong technical accounting, financial analysis, and problem-solving skills.
Analytical and structured approach with a hands-on mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
Strong understanding of business strategy and the ability to connect financial information to operational performance.
High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and reliability.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees and leaders at all levels of the organization.
Positive, collaborative, and proactive approach with a strong desire to learn and grow in a changing environment.
An equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience will be considered.
