About Us
Enable Inclusion Technologies Inc. is a North Bay research and development company that designs and builds assistive hardware for people with disabilities. We believe good technology should be affordable and easy to use, so it reaches the people who need it most.
Our current product is an adaptive hearing device for people who cannot afford commercial hearing aids. The device uses an onboard microphone array to sense its environment, a pressure sensor to check fit, and on-device calibration to adjust sound for each user. All of this runs on the device itself, with no app required.
About the Role
We are hiring a Hardware Engineering Intern to help take this device from concept to a tested prototype that is ready for manufacturing discussions. You will work on real hardware from day one: writing specifications, building circuits, testing prototypes, and improving the design based on data.
This is a small team, so your work will directly shape the product. You will work closely with our CTO, who has about 15 years of experience building technology products, and you will have regular one-on-one check-ins to review progress and plan next steps.
Key Responsibilities
Research and specifications (Months 1 to 3)
- Review existing hearing device designs and research on low-cost hearing support
- Define technical specifications for the microphone array, fit-pressure sensor, amplification circuit, and calibration routine
- Set targets for cost, battery life, comfort, and durability
Prototyping and component sourcing (Months 4 to 6)
- Select and source components that meet performance and cost targets
- Design schematics and circuit boards for sensing and amplification
- Assemble and debug working prototypes
Testing and design improvement (Months 7 to 9)
- Plan and run bench tests for sound quality, sensing accuracy, fit detection, and battery performance
- Record test results and identify design issues
- Revise the design and build improved prototype versions
Manufacturability and user testing (Months 10 to 12)
- Assess how the device can be produced at scale and at low cost
- Build a bill of materials and a unit cost model
- Support fit-testing sessions with users and document their feedback
- Prepare a final technical report and design package
Required Qualifications
- Degree, diploma, or certificate completed within the last three years in Electronics Engineering, Embedded Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field
- Understanding of basic analog and digital circuits
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, such as soldering, breadboarding, or assembling electronics
- Ability to use lab equipment such as a multimeter and oscilloscope
- Clear written communication and careful documentation habits
Preferred Skills
- Experience with sensors, microphones, or audio circuits
- Experience programming microcontrollers (for example Arduino, STM32, or ESP32) in C or C++
- Experience with PCB design software such as KiCad or Altium
- Experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360
- Interest in health technology, hearing health, or accessibility

This internship is funded through the Northern Ontario Youth Internship Program (NOYIP). Candidates must meet NOYIP eligibility requirements, which will be confirmed before hiring.
