Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

Reports To: Director of Finance
Location: Oakville, Ontario
Work Model: Hybrid, 2 days per week in the Encore office

The Opportunity

Encore is seeking an accounting-focused Controller to own the company’s end-to-end accounting cycle and create a dependable, disciplined foundation for growth. This is a hands-on role for someone who can move confidently between transaction processing, month-end close, financial reporting and process improvement without losing sight of accuracy, controls or service to the business.

Working side by side with the Director of Finance, you will take primary ownership of core accounting operations so the Director can devote greater focus to FP&A, commercial decision support and growing the business. You will be both an operator and a trusted partner: close to the detail, accountable for the output and proactive in raising issues before they become surprises.

What You’ll Own

Lead the full accounting cycle, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, collections, cash application, journal entries, accruals, prepaids and balance sheet reconciliations.
Own the monthly, quarterly and year-end close process, including the close calendar, supporting schedules, review checkpoints and timely resolution of reconciling items.
Prepare accurate financial statements and management reporting, including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow and supporting variance explanations.
Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure transactions are consistently supported, coded, approved and posted in the correct period.
Oversee vendor payments, customer invoicing and AR follow-up while maintaining clear documentation and strong working relationships with internal stakeholders.
Own project accounting execution, including project setup, WIP and revenue recognition support, project cost validation and reconciliation between project and financial reporting.
Support cash management through short-term cash visibility, banking reconciliations and clear tracking of upcoming receipts and disbursements.
Coordinate audit, tax and year-end requests by maintaining organized working papers and responding to external advisors in a timely manner.
Strengthen finance controls, standard operating procedures and review routines while identifying practical opportunities to simplify or automate recurring work.
Partner closely with the Director of Finance on accounting judgments, reporting quality, evolving business requirements and the hand-off of reliable actuals into forecasting and FP&A.

How You’ll Work With the Director of Finance

Operate as the day-to-day accounting lead and first point of ownership for close, reporting and accounting operations.
Provide clean, timely and well-explained actual results that support forecasting, margin management and business decisions.
Escalate risks early, arrive with a recommended path forward and follow issues through to resolution.
Create capacity for the Director of Finance to focus on FP&A, strategic initiatives, leadership support and business growth while maintaining close alignment on priorities and key judgments.

What You Bring

Progressive hands-on accounting experience with demonstrated ownership of a full month-end close and financial reporting cycle.
Strong technical grounding in accrual accounting, reconciliations, working capital, cut-off and financial statement preparation.
Experience owning AP and AR processes, not only reviewing the output of others.
Advanced Excel capability and comfort working with large transaction sets, reconciliations and reporting schedules.
High standards for accuracy, documentation and internal controls, paired with a practical bias toward getting work completed.
Ability to prioritize independently in a growing business, communicate clearly and collaborate with both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
Post-secondary education in accounting, finance or a related discipline. A CPA designation, or meaningful progress toward one, is preferred.

Nice to Have

Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Experience with Power BI or another financial reporting and visualization platform.
Project accounting, WIP and revenue recognition experience in a services, agency, field marketing or project-based environment.
Experience improving close processes, designing controls or implementing finance systems and workflow automation.

What Success Looks Like

FIRST 90 DAYS
Build command of Encore’s accounting cycle, systems, close calendar and key reconciliations; establish clear ownership of AP, AR and recurring month-end activities.

6 MONTHS
Run a reliable close and reporting cadence with well-supported balances, clear issue tracking and reduced day-to-day dependency on the Director of Finance.

ONGOING
Deliver accurate, timely financial reporting; continuously strengthen controls and processes; and provide an accounting foundation that can scale with Encore’s growth.
