Sr. Control Systems Engineer

Position Type: Full Time

Location: Toronto, ON (remote-hybrid)

Employer Description

Eneon is a leading Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) company and one of the fastest growing in the renewable energy and energy management industries. We are a tight-knit team of seasoned professionals who engineer, integrate, and operate premium BESS solutions across North America.

Eneon is an opportunity to hit the ground running with a growing organization, to be a part of its growth, and to help drive the global energy transformation at large. Eneon is also an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We believe diverse teams and diverse perspectives lead to better outcomes and breakthrough thinking, which are differentiators in any business and fundamental to our long-term success.

Position Description

The Sr. Control Systems Engineer will provide advanced technical judgment and hands-on execution as Eneon continues to scale its controls platform and project portfolio. This role operates as a highly experienced technical contributor, tackling complex control system challenges, supporting escalation when needed, and helping to inform the evolution of the controls architecture. Senior-level responsibility reflects depth of expertise and meaningful technical impact, with continued involvement in commissioning, debugging, and code development.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain control system software for Eneon’s BESS.
  • Translate high-level intent into reliable control behavior in the presence of incomplete or evolving requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex system-level issues spanning control logic, field devices, I/O, and communications.
  • Develop and maintain device drivers that integrate third-party equipment over industrial protocols such as Modbus TCP, SunSpec, and OPC UA.
  • Refactor existing control code for clarity and maintainability, making data flow, state, and interfaces explicit while preserving proven behavior.
  • Manage control software changes through Git, including branching, pull requests, and peer review.
  • Stay close to real systems, including commissioning, testing, and field validation.
  • Lead or support complex commissioning efforts and escalations.
  • Lead the evolution of control system architectures through direct contribution, review, and technical judgment.
  • Define and refine reusable control patterns and platform components.
  • Identify technical risks that compound over time and address them pragmatically.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with project and development teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers through shared problem-solving and real project work.

Required Qualifications

  • 8-15+ years of directly relevant experience with controls, automation, or industrial systems.
  • Technical education equivalent to: a bachelor’s degree electrical, controls, software, or mechanical engineering OR an accredited technical diploma.
  • Proven experience with PLCs, site controllers, and/or industrial control systems.
  • Extensive experience developing control software using CODESYS or similar structured text–based environments.
  • Hands-on experience integrating field devices over industrial protocols such as Modbus TCP, SunSpec, or OPC UA.
  • Extensive experience commissioning and supporting real-world systems.
  • Demonstrated senior technical leadership in complex industrial, energy, or infrastructure systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and networking boundaries.
  • Ability to work independently under critical project timelines with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication in high-stakes technical contexts.

Assets

  • Direct experience with BESS and/or energy infrastructure.
  • Experience working with productized or platform-oriented control systems.
  • DC systems ranging from 48 VDC to 1500 VDC.
  • Power conversion equipment, including inverters, converters, and rectifiers.
  • Energy storage technologies, such as electrochemical batteries, flow batteries, fuel cells, and/or compressed air energy storage (CAES) or similar systems.
  • Ignition SCADA by Inductive Automation.
  • SEL RTAC programming and integration.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing with Typhoon HIL or similar platforms.
  • Safety PLCs, interlocks, and safety-related control functions.
  • Certification and witness testing, such as UL 9540 or TÜV evaluations.
  • Prior experience applying Git or similar version control to PLC or control code.

A note on the use of AI in our hiring process: We use AI-enabled tools to help sort and assess applications against core job-related criteria (such as skills, experience, and qualifications). AI does not make hiring decisions. The members of our hiring team review results carefully and make all final decisions. Your application materials are used only for the purpose of evaluating your candidacy for this role.

Finally, a note on qualifications: Even if you don't have every listed requirement, but you feel strongly about this role and believe you'd bring value, we encourage you to apply. We'd rather hear from someone who's genuinely excited about the work than miss out because they didn't tick every box!

Thank you for your interest in a career at Eneon!
