2.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 Position Summary
A Sub Arc Welder operates submerged arc welding (SAW) equipment at EnerCorp's Grande Prairie, Alberta fabrication facility to join pressure-retaining and structural components used in sand management and production equipment. This individual works to registered Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and fabrication drawings, sets up and tunes welding parameters, and is accountable for the quality, traceability, and safety of every weld produced. This individual works under minimal supervision and reports to the Fabrication Manager.
2.2 Key Responsibilities
Operate submerged arc welding equipment to weld pressure vessels, pressure-retaining components, structural members, and other fabricated products.
Set up welding equipment, including fit-up, positioners, flux handling, and wire feed, and select welding parameters within the limits of the applicable registered WPS.
Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld maps, welding symbols, bills of material, and Welding Procedure Specifications.
Perform all welding strictly in accordance with approved procedures, applicable codes, and EnerCorp quality requirements. Deviation from a registered WPS is not permitted without authorization from the Welding Examiner or Quality representative.
Complete visual inspection of own welds, identify surface defects such as porosity, undercut, slag inclusion, lack of fusion, and arc strikes, and repair or report as required.
Maintain accurate weld records and traceability, including welder identification stamping, heat and consumable traceability, and completion of production travellers or weld logs.
Support non-destructive examination (NDE) activities and complete authorized weld repairs in response to inspection findings.
Maintain SAW equipment, including routine operator maintenance, consumable changeout, flux recovery and storage, and report equipment defects to the Fabrication Manager.
Handle, store, and condition welding consumables in accordance with manufacturer and procedure requirements to protect weld integrity.
Complete a Field Level Hazard Assessment or equivalent prior to each task, and comply with all hot work, confined space, overhead crane, and lock out or tag out requirements.
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area, including housekeeping of flux, slag, and combustible materials.
Report all incidents, near misses, and hazards promptly, and participate in incident investigations as required.
Work independently while meeting production schedules, hold points, and quality standards.
Support and mentor apprentices and less experienced welders as assigned.
Participate in toolbox meetings, safety training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications3.0 COMPETENCIES
3.1 Education, Training and Experience
Interprovincial (Red Seal) endorsement is an asset.
ABSA Machine Welding Operator Certificate of Competency with a valid Performance Qualification card covering the submerged arc welding process, base material group, filler metal group, deposited weld metal thickness, and positions used in production. Candidates who do not hold this certification at hire must successfully qualify to EnerCorp's registered automatic welding procedures within 90 days of hire, at EnerCorp's expense.
Minimum of two years of production submerged arc welding experience.
Experience welding pressure vessels or heavy fabrication is an asset.
Working knowledge of ASME Section IX performance qualification requirements and of CSA W47.1 and CSA W59 where structural welding is performed.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and welding symbols.
Sufficient written and verbal English to read and apply Welding Procedure Specifications, drawings, safety rules, and operating and maintenance manuals, and to complete quality records.
Legally entitled to work in Canada.
3.2 Skills and Abilities
Thorough understanding of submerged arc welding variables, including amperage, voltage, travel speed, wire stick-out, flux depth, and their effect on penetration, bead profile, and heat input.
Able to set up, align, and operate SAW equipment, including boom and column, seamers, turning rolls, and positioners.
Competent in fit-up, tacking, joint preparation, bevelling, and control of root gap and alignment prior to welding.
Able to select and verify welding consumables against the applicable WPS.
Skilled at interpreting weld maps and production travellers, and at recording weld data accurately for traceability.
Able to identify weld discontinuities through visual inspection and determine whether repair, grinding, or escalation is required.
Understanding of distortion control, preheat and interpass temperature requirements, and post-weld heat treatment considerations.
Competent with grinders, needle scalers, chipping tools, and other weld preparation and cleanup equipment.
Safe operation of overhead cranes and rigging of fabricated components, or willingness to obtain certification.
Working knowledge of hot work permitting, ventilation and fume control, and PPE selection for welding operations.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to work in both metric and imperial units.
Responsible for reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals.

4.0 PHYSICAL, SAFETY & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Able to do a 16 kg. overhead lift.
Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and reaching for the majority of an 8 to 12 hour shift.

Repetitive use of hands and arms, including grinding, chipping, and tool operation with vibration exposure.
Ability to climb ladders and stairs, and to work at heights and on elevated work platforms as needed.
Ability to enter and work within confined or restricted spaces such as vessel interiors, subject to confined space entry procedures and clearance.
Visual acuity sufficient to read drawings and to perform close visual inspection of welds. Corrective lenses are permitted and will be accommodated within approved eye protection.
Ability to wear all required PPE for the full shift, including welding helmet, flame resistant clothing, leathers, gloves, safety footwear, hearing protection, and respiratory protection where required. Respirator use requires the ability to pass fit testing, which may require the wearer to be clean shaven at the seal area.
Pass the required pre-employment drug and alcohol screen in accordance with EnerCorp policy and applicable law.
The employee must be adaptable to the working conditions of an indoor fabrication and shop environment. This position involves exposure to welding fumes and airborne particulate, arc radiation, hot surfaces, sparks and slag, loud noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, overhead loads, and seasonal temperature variation in shop and yard areas, where proper PPE must be donned.
Hours of work are Monday to Friday, day shift, with overtime as required. Overtime is paid in accordance with the Alberta Employment Standards Code.
Ability to travel occasionally as needed.
