Summary
Are you a detail-oriented designer who thrives on translating complex engineering concepts into accurate, practical solutions? As a Designer within our Electric Power team, you will develop and maintain the drawings, models, layouts, and technical documentation required to support power generation projects for utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), industrial facilities, mining operations, and other critical infrastructure clients.
Working with cross-functional teams across Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations, you will help move projects from concept and contract award through detailed design, fabrication, testing, delivery, and commissioning. You will collaborate with engineers and other technical professionals to capture design intent, resolve design issues, and produce complete, controlled fabrication and construction packages.
This role is well suited to someone with strong technical drafting, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills who enjoys working in a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment. Experience with power generation systems, mechanical equipment packages, or modular fabrication is considered an asset.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Produce and revise detailed 3D models using CAD software, including equipment layouts, assemblies, detail drawings, and related design documentation.
- Translate engineering sketches, specifications, design notes, customer requirements, blueprints, and project documentation into accurate technical drawings and models.
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, manufacturing personnel, and other designers to develop design concepts and ensure design intent is fully captured.
- Prepare and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), drawing lists, fabrication packages, construction packages, and other project deliverables as required.
- Apply company drafting standards, quality procedures, project specifications, and applicable industry standards, including ASME Y14 requirements.
- Maintain drawing accuracy and traceability through disciplined version control, revision management, documentation updates, and drawing database administration.
- Review dimensions, tolerances, interfaces, and equipment arrangements; perform basic design calculations or checks where appropriate.
- Participate in design reviews, clearly present design solutions to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders, and incorporate feedback efficiently.
- Identify design conflicts, omissions, and constructability or manufacturability concerns, and work with the project team to develop practical solutions.
- Support prototype development, including documenting observations and incorporating approved design changes.
- Coordinate design information across disciplines to support complete, integrated, and client-focused power generation solutions.
- Stay current with relevant CAD tools, design technologies, industry practices, and methods that improve quality and productivity.
- Complete assigned work in accordance with project schedules, priorities, and quality expectations while managing multiple concurrent tasks.
Qualifications
- College diploma in mechanical engineering design, drafting technology, mechanical engineering technology, or a related field.
- Two to five years of professional experience in CAD drafting or equipment design.
- Two to five years of experience supporting mechanical products, equipment, or assemblies in a fast-paced engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in at least one major CAD platform, such as AutoCAD.
- Strong understanding of technical drawing practices, dimensioning, tolerancing, and applicable drafting standards; knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is required where relevant to the work.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
- Experience supporting modular fabrication, skid-mounted equipment, industrial facilities, utilities, mining operations, or other critical infrastructure projects – not mandatory but preferred.
